现任纽约市立学院客座美术家、北京中央美术学院的张安治教授是我的好友，他是一位画家、诗人、书法家，也是一位写有许多有关中国艺术论文和书籍的权威作家。

　　当他还在青年学生时期，受教于享有国际声望的已故艺术家徐悲鸿教授，当时徐是南京中央大学美术系的主任，张很快就得到赏识，成为他最喜爱的一名学生。以后这位年轻的艺术家很快就具有自己的独特的成就。1946年他去欧洲，直到1950年回国前，他在英、法开了多次个人画展，并讲演介绍中国艺术，受到了热烈的欢迎和好评。

　　张教授是位多才的人，他属于一种有特殊教养的人，这种人不但需要有出色的绘画才能，还需要具有书法和高水平的中国古典文学、哲学的修养，像这样多才多艺的艺术家，在中国常被称为“文人画家”。这种传统开始于六朝时代(221-589A.D)当时有许多学问渊博的知识分子，从事绘画的创作。

　　一些学者从事绘画艺术，演变了中国画的一些特点，减少了神话题材，那种带有装饰风的表现自然和人像，文人画家也认为局限性太大。代之以绘画也像写诗，并互相结合成为艺术家的自我表现——是自由和人类真实价值的象征……分享自然的创造力和人类精神最好的显示。

　　“文人画”自一开始，就吸引了中国一代接一代的想象力。它的影响直到边疆。在朝鲜、日本和其他的地方，都有其拥护者。

　　超越一般意识和培养一种兴趣，界乎“不关心之关心”和“无意之意”之间，“文人画”的成功就在于这种境界，像自然在运动，它从不寻求新，而自有天趣，甚至意外的奇特。……同样，像自然，它从不注意炫耀或丝毫满足，但常在准备为理解它的人们服务。

　　张教授的来到市立学院像是及时雨，为中美文化交流揭开了新篇章，它的意义将是很深远的。(1983年)

　　Professor Zhang Anzhi of the Beijing Central Institute of Fine Arts, PRC, currently, the Artist-in-Residence at the City College of New York,is a good friend of mine. He is a painter, poet, calligrapher and an authority and author of many articles and books on Chinese art.

　　As a young student studying art under the guidance of the late Professor Ju Peon, a celebrated artist of international fame, then Chairman of the Art Department, the National Central University in Nanking(Nanjing),he immediately attracted the attention of his mentor and became a favorite disciple of his.However,the young artist soon became a master in his own right and in 1946,made a trip to Europe.Before he returned to China in 1950,he lectured on Chinese art and gave a number of exhibitions in England and France for which he was warmly received and applauded.

　　A man of many talents,Professor Zhang,in the Chinese tradition,belongs to a special breed of men and women who meet the demanding requirement of excellence not only in the art of painting,but also calligraphy and a high level of scholarship in Classic(Chinese) learning,philosophy and literature.Such a talented artist with a scholarly background is known,in China,as“ wen-jen-hua-chia”or“lterati-painter”,and the tradition started, sometime during the Six Dynasties period(221-589A.D)when the members of the intelligentsia,all steeped in the high learning,became inspired to paint pictures.

　　The involvement of scholars in the doing of pictorial art changed the character of Chinese painting drastically.Relegated to an inferior position were the paintings of myths,those of a decorative nature and portraits,all of which the scholarly painters found to be too limiting.Instead,painting,like poetry writing,together with its expressive means,becomes a way of self-expression for the artist - a symbol of freedom,of human dignity… partaking in the creative power of Nature and manifesting the best of the human spirit.

　　“Wen-jen-hua”,since its inception, has captured the imagination of the Chinese generation after generation and before Iong,its influence reached beyond the border and adherents are found in Korea,Japan and other lands.

　　Emulating the Consciousness universal, and cul- tivating an interest which borders on that of “ disinterested-interest” and “ a purposiveness without purpose”, the success of “ wen-jen-hua” lies in the fact that,like Nature in action,it is ever on the search for the new ,the refreshing,the unexpected and even the bizare… and again,like Nature,it is never its intention to glorify or appease a few,but always ready to serve all people who understand.

　　Professor Zhang誷 presence at the City College, like a timely rain, has turned a new page in the Sino-American cultural relationship and its significance will be most enduring.
