平君在杭州生活时,我们先是朋友后来又成了同事。当时在杭州由平君发起成立了一个“无边界”小组,不定期聚会。顾名思义,无边界就是没有边界,什么身份的人都可加入。我记得有张克端、李磊、尚平君、钟磊、陈健、张国清、黄河清、王小章、包春田等人。小组聚会通常由一人主题发言,其后是闲聊。每次平君都会尽心安排,从场地到吃饭。这也是平君为人处世的一大特点,认真。
今天回想起来,无边界小组似乎没什么明确目标,主要成员来自浙大和美院。南方人居多,普通话不标准,嗓门也大不起来。但交流起来有质感。内容差不多都忘了,感觉还挺有份量。
平君以前是喝酒的,偏爱白的。城西的很多小酒馆都留下了我们的欢笑和冏态。酒到兴处,我们的保留项目是轮流唱歌,平君每次都有一首“长亭外,古道边”。他唱歌和别人不一样,别人是原位坐着唱或起身唱,他是离开座位有一个上场亮相。
平君的画我看不懂,但很喜欢。在我这个外行看来,抽象艺术是一种做减法的艺术,但这种减法又并非发生在物理世界。它更接近于胡塞尔所说的“悬搁”。看平君的作品,我一直感觉到他在不断地加减括号。他的作品是加了括号之后的“剩余”。所谓“精神的剩余”,对一个艺术家而言,可能就是他的全部世界。上一次在北京展览,我问起他的信仰和创作的关系,他的回答是坚定的。在信仰和创作之间找一种对应是肤浅的,只有信仰达到足够的强度,它才会内化成你的心。
平君是一个严肃的艺术家,同时也是一位温婉的朋友。我衷心祝愿他的上海展览成功。
Boundaryless Scenery
When Pingjun lived in Hangzhou, we became friends first, and later we became colleagues. At that time, a "boundaryless" group initiated by Pingjun in Hangzhou would get together occasionally. As its name implied, boundaryless meant that there weren't any boundaries, and anyone, regardless of his/her status, could join the group. I remember that there were Zhang Kerui, Li Lei, Shang Pingjun, Zhong Lei, Chen Jian, Zhang Guoqing, Huang Heqing, Wang Xiaozhang, and Bao Chuntian, et. al. Usually, the group get-together started with a themed statement by one member, and thereafter followed by chatting. Everytime, Pingjun would make arrangements with all his heart, from the venue to the catering. This also showed one major characteristic of how Pingjun conducted himself in society, which was being earnest.
Now, when I look back, it seems that the boundaryless group had no unequivocal goals. Most of its members came from Zhejiang University and the Academy of Fine Arts. Southerners were in the majority. They couldn't speak standard mandarin, and their voices were not loud. But the communications were full of artistic quality. I have forgotten most of the contents. But I could feel that they were significant.
Pingjun loved drinking before, especially the white spirit. Many bistros in the west of the city had witnessed our laughter and embarrassment. When we got excited after drinking, our retention program was to sing in turn, and everytime, Pingjun would sing "old pathway, long shelter". He was different from others when he was singing. Others would stay where they were and sit or stand when they were singing, but he would leave his seat and strike a pose on the stage first.
Although I don't understand Pinjun's paintings, I like them a lot. From the point of view of an outsider like me, Abstract Art is the art of doing substraction which however, doesn't happen in this physical world. It is more like what Husserl called"disparity". When I am watching Pingjun's works, I keep feeling that he is constantly adding up or cutting down brackets; they are the "remains" after being bracketed. The so-called "remains of spirits" might be the whole world for an artist. During the exhibition last time in Beijing, I asked him about the corelations between his creation and his belief, and he was determined about his answer. It was shallow trying to find a correlation between your belief and your creation. Belief can only be internalised into your heart when it is firm enough.
Pingjun is a serious artist as well as a kind friend. I sincerely hope that his exhibition in Shanghai succeed.
