Some 30 rock-colour paintings by female artist Lin Jiangdong are on show at the Wan Fung Art Gallery.
The works on show attract viewers with their vivid colours and unique style. Employing synthetic material based on the colour of rock(a kind of pigment originally used in rock painting), Lin presents her art language directly on printing blocks.
Traditional Chinese painting emphasizes the effect of dark and lightink, while never neglecting the use of colour. Compared to Western-style paintings which emphasize realism and expression, the Asian-style convey symbolism and ornamentation. Lin uses colour to transmit a poetic scene.
The contents of her works, drawn from her memories, subconscious mind, capricious mood and quiet imagination are presented in the form of abstract or semi-abstract paintings. Vivid colours gladden the eye of viewer like flowing melody.
Looking at her work, it is hard to believe that fine arks wasnot her major. During herstudy in the Japanese Language Department of Peking University in the 1960s, Lin became known for her talent in fine arts and litera-ture, Receiving a master’s degree in econom-ics, she was engaged in business for 20 years. Out of an inner love for art, she then engaged in advanced study in the China Art Institute, the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Beijing Painting Institute. Now in Japan, she makes an effort to promote Chinese art abroad.
