有很长一段时间，在工作之余，我一直在张霭维老师的画室习画，直到她移居加拿大，原因当然是出在她极力想要在绘画刨作方面有新的突破。后来隔了一段时间，看到她的画展，心中十分感动，作品激情优雅，见画如见其人，尤其她所画的肖像画，堪称形神兼备、栩栩如生一，确实画出新意。
藉这新画集的呈现，很荣幸有机会谈谈我对她的肖像画的看法：西方绘画强调立体、空间、色彩、光感、造型美和格调，而中国画更强调神似、韵味；虽然油画肖像来自西方，但作为一位中国油画家的她吸收了中国画传统优点，而使肖像画形神兼备，因而赋予了肖像画不朽的生命。
她说她在画每位对象时，为了要达到形神兼备，除了外表的感性印象外更重要的还要取得对象的神韵，因此她总是以尊重的心情去观察和了解被画的对象，包括他（她）们的职业、爱好；并在交谈中，了解其个性，藉以发掘其内心世界和人格特质，进而力求从对象的内在因素中感受到美之所在，在这个过程中她不会要求绘画对象坐定不动，他们可以随便谈笑;轻松自在，这样才不会使对象处于拘谨和呆板的处境而掩盖了神采和原来的特质与个性。在初步了解了被画对象的基础上，通过可视形象（例如构图、姿态、面部表情、环境、色调笔触、形式感），把她对被画者的感受表现出来。
肖像画是通过画家个人独特的表达方式，使被画者的外表和性格特征得到升华。这就是尽管现代摄影艺术日益先迸仍然无法代替一幅好的肖像画的原因。
她曾受邀为谢东闵先生及郝柏村先生画肖像，在动笔时，把他们的脸型画得硬朗些，使人看来觉得精力充沛和年轻，从嘴角加强其坚毅之神情，在刻划鼻翼和嘴角时，表露出他们处事的沉着和果断，眼神流露出智慧与博学，让观者称赞不巳，她在台所画过的人物还包括联合报系、世界日报前董事长王惕吾先生、台塑集团董事长王永庆先生及夫人及海硕集团董事长韩国福先生及夫人等。值得一提的是，在肖像完成后，每个人都非常满意；称赞 “这才是我！”谢东闵先生曾说：“张霭维女士画我的肖像是我一生中最喜欢的一张画！”
依我所观察，一个画家自然万物都能画的不多，从她的画册作品中可以看出，在台湾时，她的足迹走遍了全台，她经常背着画箱独自一人在阿里山上游走写生。因此除了她的肖像画在台湾画坛享有盛名外，还有她那充满激情的风景画和静物画也都深受收藏家的欢迎。随着今后的岁月，我深信能有更多的机会能欣赏到她的新作。

　　For a long time. I studied painting after work ai Ms.Ai-Wai Chaung studio until she moved to Canada What attracted me the most was her creative breakthrough in painting.Some time after that,I saw her exhibition and was extremely touched by her elegant works.It made me feel that I was seeing her in person, especially with her portrait paintings.These portraits are so vivid that they were brought io life.
 With the release of this new painting album, I am honored to have the opportunity to provide my opinions on her portrait paintings: Western paintings emphasize on three dimensions, space, color, sense of lighting, beauty of shapes and style, whereas Chinese paintings focus more on spirit similarity and charming appeals. Although oil painting originates from the West, as a Chinese oil painter, she mixed the traditional merits of Chinese painting to make her paintings full of both spirits and appearance, thus giving life to her portraits.
She said that when she paints, in order to accomplish the combination of spirits and appearance, she observes not just the impression from the appearance, but also the person as a whole. Therefore, she always paints with a respectful mind toward the targets, including knowing their jobs, hobbies; and from conversation, learns the individual character of each person to discover the inner world and unique characteristics of the person, so that the target of the painting will be able to demonstrate their beauty from within. During this process, she does not ask the targets to sit still, instead, they could talk, laugh and relax. This prevents the targets from being stiff and reserved, and consequently concealing their true characters and personality From the understanding of the person whose portrait is being drawn, through visible image" (such as composition, posture, facial expression, coloring and touches as well as the forms,) she paints her feelings toward the targets.
I think the personal expression of a painter elevates the characteristics and the appearance of the targets. Even though the modern photography techniques have advanced significantly they still can not replace a good painting for this reason.
She was invited to paint a portrait for Mr. Dongmin Xie and Mr. Hao Bo Cun. She painted their faces with more straight lines to make them look younger and more energetic. A sense of determination is demonstrated through the drawing on the side of the mouth and the line on the nose. Their eyes show their eruditeness and wisdom. Everybody who saw her paintings applauded her skills and interpretation. She also painted chairman of the United Daily, Mr Tiwu Wang; President of Taisuo Group, Mr. Yongqing Wang and his wife; as well as chairman of Haishuo Group, Mr. Guofu Han and his wife. It worth pointing out that almost every person was extremely satisfied with their portraits and mentioned that this is the real me. Mr. Dongmin Xie even praised his portrait by Ms. Ai-Wai Chaung as the painting that I like the most.
According to my observation, few painters are able to paint whatever they see in the nature. From the works in this album viewers can see that when the painter was in Taiwan, She had really been visiting everywhere. She was always seen with her box walking on Mount Ali, painting from life. So, besides her portrait paintings having very popular in Taiwan, those emotional and affractive landscapes and still-life paintings are warmly appreciated by collectors. I am looking forward to seeing more of her wanderful new artworks in the years to come.
