《心•懋》画册前言

  陈心懋的画集出版了,祝贺他!

  粗略算来,我与心懋相识近三年,其时,他正潜心研习水墨人物。几十年来,他在水墨领域勤奋耕耘,颇有所成,早该将自己的心得、成果与众人、同行分享,然而迟迟未见结集出版。似乎他颇享受耕种之乐,并不在意收获多寡。也许他一直并不满意自己的成果?也许他就有更高的目标?

  我赞赏这种积极进取的精神,但我认为及时总结也很重要。

  水墨画在当今承载了过多的东西。传统的辉煌、振兴民族文化的希望,使水墨画备受关注。事实上,近一二十年的发展,水墨画并没有山穷水尽,却出现了空前繁荣。原因很多,当然艺术家从观念、形式与技巧进行积极多样的研究探索,应该说是主要原因。陈心懋就是这样一位积极探索者。

  心懋创作探索涉及面非常广泛。他的专业是水墨人物,后又画了许多山水、风景,其中一些作品令我印象深刻。1991年上海美术馆为陈心懋等四人举办的画展中,他的数十幅水墨风景受到关注,上海美术馆收藏了其中数幅。他作抽象水墨也历时很长,1986年至今已有二十年了。对抽象水墨的形式、语言甚或材质媒介部分门别类作了研究和探索。他尤其重视抽象水墨的精神内涵和民族特性,其努力和作品也取得了很好的反响。

  但陈心懋并不止步于抽象水墨,近几年来,又有新的突破。他似乎对中国画的内涵加了更深的体会。在新作中,我们很高兴看到他的笔墨、意韵又有新的面貌和领悟。

  时代在发展,水墨画在当今的形态究竟应该如何,并没有现成的答案。探索之路漫长,但这并不是陈心懋一个人的事。他的努力和取得的成果代表了一种趋势——源远流长的水墨画在当今必将更加绚丽多彩!

  Preface

  Finally Chen Xianmao's catalogue is published. Congratulations to him!

  I have known Xinmao for roughly 30 years now. When I first met him, he was researching and studying figurative ink paintings. He worked extremely diligently on ink paintings and made great progress. He should have shared his understanding and achievement with audience, other artists, a long time ago. However he postponed his catalogue time and time again, so it seems that he enjoys the progress of studying and doesn't care too much about the success. Perhaps he is always not satisfied by his progress, or perhaps he is still ambitious to reach an even higher goal?

  I admire this positive attitude towards art. But I think it's necessary to make a conclusion at a right time.

  Ink painting nowadays is becoming more and more important. China's illustrious history and people's expectation of our national culture help to draw a lot of attention to ink painting. As a matter of fact, because of its development in the past decade or two, ink paintings art not out of style. On the contrary, ink painting is flourishing now more than just about anytime in history. This is due to many reasons. Contemporary artists' research and exploration are, of course, the main reason. Chen Xinmao is just such a positive explorer.

  Xinmao explores the many fields of ink painting. He majored in Chinese ink figure painting. After that he focused his efforts on landscape paintings. Some of them greatly impressed me. In the exhibition held in 1991 at the Shanghai Art Museum, Chen Xinmao and 3 other artists exhibited their artworks. Chen's artworks attracted the most attention and the Shanghai Art Museum even collected some of his paintings. He has been working on his abstract paintings for 20 years, starting all the way back in 1986. He did some research and experiments using different forms and mediums. He paid special attention to the spiritual connotation and national characteristics. His efforts and artworks have received a lot of praise.

  But Chen Xinmao didn't stop his exploration. In recent years, he has had some new and exciting breakthroughs. He seems to have reached a deeper, more complete understanding of the connotation of Chinese painting. In his new paintings, it is wonderful to see his usage of ink and some of the new sophistication of his techniques.

  Time is unraveling. There is no definite answer to what the ink paintings should be nowadays. There is still a long road to go. And it's not only Chen Xinmao's road. His effort and achievement represents a kind of trend-the traditional Chinese medium of ink painting, which has a long history, will have an even more colorful future!
