I was born in Huilai county of Guangdong province, a famous landing point of typhoon.
I have experienced several times of movings of my family which came from Huilai to Shantou, then to Shenzhen. So I studied first in Shenzhen and then in Guangzhou. Now I have settled down in Guangzhou.
In 1994 I was enrolled in the affiliated middle school of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts where I graduated from the department of Chinese painting with B.A. degree. During the 8 years, I have always received the education in traditional arts. After graduation, I taught in the affiliated middle school for several years and at the same time kept on creating traditional works.
Since 2009, I have intended to try different Chinese painting. I set the requirement for myself: to present different atmosphere by adopting traditional techniques. The works should both have the quality of contemporariness and arouse the sympathy of the large part of Chinese people.
I like the respectable masters in the past and I also like many contemporary masters. I always think that I can find a door. After opening the door you can see these masters smile to each other.
In fact there are only two kinds of paintings: one is good painting, the other is painting that is not good enough.
Many Chinese parents will let their children recite poetry and Ci. In my childhood I could be the best child in this aspect. When I grow older, the poetry and Ci have slowly become broken pieces in my mind. What is left has become very picturesque. Due to the childish understanding, the pictures are unique and beautiful and perhaps naïve. Yet the very naivety creates sincere beauty.
That is one of the reasons why the children who love arts will draw freely on the blank edges of their textbooks. Even now I am very proud of the moment when my drawings were discovered by teachers. In the fully occupied classroom one can still focus on drawing the naughty pictures, what passion the painter should have for the imagined world! Maybe among those pictures are the drafts for the present works. I now decide to paint those pictures for the manifest effect.
There is little relationship between traditional Chinese painting and illusion and dream. However, Chinese philosophy is closely related to illusion and dream. I think the combining of these factors can help to produce good effect.
Before this year I have never taken part in the exhibition with the theme of contemporary era or future. This is because I always took part in the exhibition with the identity of “a painter of traditional Chinese painting”. I hope these paintings can arouse the sympathy of the visitors.
