唐朝初建，为统一全国，简化军饷筹集步骤，故唐朝建国伊始仍然沿用五铢钱。在唐朝始铸开元通宝之前，始于汉代的五铢钱在全国已流通700余年之久。当唐朝局势稳定后，为适应其统治需要，于武德四年（公元621年）七月，颁诏废五铢钱，由唐高祖李渊亲自主导，给事中欧阳询监制，改铸统一的开元通宝。
