The Wasteland – Hundred Flowers Blooming is one of the most important artworks by John Zhang Long. The Wasteland series is the first series created by the artist since he re-opened his studio in China. The artist was inspired by the Sea of Flower in Shangri-La, where he realised the essence of life: the beauty of the ephemeral and the eternal. It resonates the poems by T.S. Elliot, the artist’s favourite poet. It symbolises the everlasting and the resurrection of life. John Zhang Long said: this world has suffered, so as our souls, and we need to be cured, which requires the angelic tenderness and compassion for helping us undergo hardship, solitude and desperation.
The painting stems from aestheticism and abstract expressionism; meanwhile it does not limit itself in the realm of the Abstract Art and Western Expressionism. Instead, it renews the traditional Chinese Yi Xiang (意象Topos; Imagism). Flowers as a theme contains both Chinese national and individual symbolic power. It can be said, John Zhanglong’s imagist painting is de-constructive, as the interpretation of the art is manifold and de-central.
