Auerbach invited a small number of loyal friends to come to the studio regularly for him to paint portraits. Lambert is one of them. It's not easy to agree to let Auerbach paint his portrait, because it takes him months or even years to finish a painting. As a firm perfectionist, Auerbach is seldom satisfied with the result of one day's painting. He often scrapes all the contents of one day's painting and starts from scratch the next week. For nearly 40 years since 1978, Lambert has been going to Auerbach's studio almost every week without interruption. "I occasionally miss Friday's visit because I'm traveling, but I'll make up for my lost painting time when I come back," Lambert said. You have to go to Auerbach's studio as much as you can, or he will be very unhappy.

Gradually, however, the conversation stopped. Lambert explained: "the person depicted will fall into his own thoughts and say nothing, especially in the second hour. This quiet time is wonderful, and Auerbach was so focused on his work that I didn't want to interrupt him."
