Females usually have more artistic cells than males, and they are usually more sensuous and exquisite, thus their sensitive, following-the-instinct and uncontrolled emotional fluctuation is more easily and more directly demonstrated in their words and actions, leading the life of females closer to art.
Yet it is usually harder for females to become outstanding artists than for males, as females usually lack the persistence and confidence needed in expression. Artistic creation requires passion, courage and resolution, but the delicateness of females tend to make their work trivial and petty, hence more difficult for females to succeed in the art circle.
However, we have lucky fellows around us, ones like Angelique Shidi, who has both the exquisiteness and sensitivity of females and the boldness and confidence of males. She paints like the spring grass by a pond, or the drifting cloud and wild storks, following where the heart goes, without any restrictions. And that is a natural gift, a born personality advantage, something that might be exasperating to those working hard to cultivate and acquire.
One day Angelique Shidi was immersed in drawing a ring with her head down. The structure of the ring looked complex due to the effect of the perspective and the shade, making her somewhat impatient. I showed her how to draw, telling her that the structure might be simplified. She cheered up, “Yes, yes, it’s simple when you understand it…isn’t it? I can draw now!! Nothing difficult!” I smiled too, “What a kid! Feeling happy for such a small thing, and feeling confident because of such a small achievement.”
For several months I did not see her in the SARS crisis, and unexpectedly she painted quite a number of colourful and strong works, which surprised everybody. I asked: “How could you paint so fast?” She felt shy and shouted, “I paint as I wish! I just paint for fun, for myself.” The works were very good, with big brushwork over the paper and the random flow of the water and colour producing a dreamlike poetic quality… They all look natural and magnificent, with no trace of affectation, quite resembling the works of a master. I commented, “What a world! A genius has been born, how do we professionals make a living after this?”
Such is the persona of Angelique Shidi-she paints as she likes, as she is willful in life. She paints for joy and lives in joy – which is exactly the most fundamental meaning of art.
