Invisible Wings in the Wind, the exhibition of Angelique Shidi’s work was unveiled in Paris by the Seine In January 2005, arousing extensive interest in her abstract painting in people from the cultural and diplomatic circles of both China and France. Despite the wide range cultural backgrounds and artistic tastes, the visitors apparently enjoyed the clear and colourful poetic space created by this young painter. The exhibition might just be a small dimple in the vast Seine, for Paris is featured for all kinds of shows around the year. However, standing before the paintings in the light of the magnificent pendent lamp, I, an art historian from China, could not help but make sensational sighs over the development of abstract painting in China.
The environment for Angelique Shidi’s art practice is far more lucid and peaceful than the previous two or three generations of Chinese artists, and this enables her to fully enjoy the pleasure of art creation, and utter those words that could never came out from a previous generation Chinese painter, “Painting makes me happy. There is no convention, no restriction here. Left on the frames are myself that is fluxing like the sunshine and the morning breeze…,” which is of course the natural context for art creation. Her painting practice is mentally a self-motivated act without external interference, questioning, demanding or urging, and she paints to realize her dream and therefore responds only to her heart, which is hard to do for most contemporary painters. This is a world without the pollution of human activities, and without anyone to show imprudent arrogance before the Nature, which is best described with the words that she uses to call her works:
The Vague/ The Appeal/ The Spring Call/ Between Behind Beyond/ Flooding Strokes Brushing Storm/ Dreamy Summer Night/ Tranquility/ The Immediately Remote…
In this aspect Shid’s painting practice complements and illuminates us, that contemporary painters could operate their art with this tempo and sentiment.
