Impression on Haifeng

Haifeng and I have visited many places purposelessly in recent years. Although we are in different cities, we live not that distantly. Now and then, we call or visit each other. We go and see an art show, have a pleasant chat without particular topic, or just smile at each other. Haifeng says that he wants to publish a book and hopes that I could write an article for him. For there are so many interesting things between we two, I don’t know where to write from. So the article has been delayed. When eyes closed, I would see Haifeng’s affable smile with his eyes winked, his cynical appearance, his seriousness, patience and sensibility on painting…

Haifeng is a kind person. As a student of Mr. Li Boan, Haifeng puts his teacher’s picture in the prominent place in his studio. Haifeng says that looking at his teacher’s work could encourage him to keep going forwards. Since graduated from Henan University, Haifeng has stayed for teaching there and lived in Kaifeng for more than 10 years. Every time I go to Kaifeng, he always treated me in Ding Mutton Soup Family Restaurant. There we ate Four-flavor Vegetable, Pure-oil Meat, Pot Roast and Sauerkraut among many rural migrant workers under the tarpaulin. After drinking for a while and becoming a little drunk, we continued to ramble through the alley and visit the Iron Tower and the Dragon Pavilion. Meanwhile, Haifeng would say something about his private life. He said that after striving for career for so many years, his parents have grown old and he wanted to live with them and look after them. He also wanted to marry a confidant so that his parents would worry less about him. In the early winter in 2010, Haifeng was sent abroad by the university. After returned Kaifeng from France through Russia, he halted a moment and then dashed towards his hometown to paint from nature. He said that he always missed the stewed noodle when in St. Petersburg. It seemed a little queer that the farther we went away, the more we would miss the place we grow up, even though it was just a poor mountainous area.

Haifeng is an industrious person. The year before last year, I went to visit Haifeng just to see him devoted in painting with naked shoulder and short pants. I scanned his manuscript of Fenglingdu Ferry. He had painted for a book-collection and every image in each page had been through repeated scrutiny. It really shocked me, how much time he had spent on these scripts and how meticulous he was. While been astonished, I realized that he was designing an amazing work. He had drawn many thickly dotted palm-sized figures, which could compare beauty with the essence of the painting in North Song Dynasty. It did not disappoint. This series of works had been awarded and exhibited once and again. Once we had dinner with a provincial official. The official wanted to buy the work at a quite high price. Haifeng was worried about his work and finally gave the work to an intimate friend with much less money. He said that he could set his heart at rest by giving the work to the friend, and it’s convenient to see the work whenever he wanted. From winter to summer, Haifeng worked hard in his studio. For several times I went to visit him, his eyes were always bloodshot and looked very tired. In recent years, Haifeng has earned many achievements. And there is no need for me to give a list. What I remember is that Haifeng always says that we should think Mr. Anbo every chance we get. We should warn ourselves to be diligent, to cherish the honor and to be more ease when in success.

Haifeng is a serious person. Even three days are not enough for me to talk about Haifeng’s seriousness. Here I want to mention one thing. Couple years ago, Haifeng and I went to the Royal Mausoleum of North Song Dynasty in Gongyi City. It was a rainy day. We talked forwards and encountered the Yongchang Mausoleum casually. All the seeing was the historical imprints and debris in the rain. There must be ancient eaves tile of Song Dynasty, I said. Haifeng said that there was no reason to say so. However, Haifeng kicked casually and an intact lotus eaves tile of early North Song Dynasty appeared. I thought to myself that how could he found this tile so coincidentally, for it was also what I was longing for. But I still pretended to be calm and said that this tile was so common and would not worth too much. He smiled excitedly and put the tile into his pocket before I finished my words. Afterwards, I went to his studio and saw the wall was printed by high imitated printed output of Song Dynasty printing. And the picked ancient eaves tile was put in the central prominent closet. Haifeng explained seriously that when he painted “Fenglindu Ferry”, he always compared his work with the Song Painting and sometimes looked at the ancient eaves tile to see if the style was identical. I said that the ancient eaves tile was rather good. Then we saw each other and smiled fatuously…
