草虫的种类很多，大都身体细小，如用工笔画法，先用墨钩出身体各部轮廓，描出翅膀上的脉纹和身上的绒毛。一般因为草虫的体积小，在着色花乌画中不用墨钩，直接用色笔点画，有时用墨画后着色。草虫的翅，前翅比后翅大，前脚比后脚短，宜先画前翅再补后翅。有的草虫翅膀很美丽，如蝴蝶、飞蛾等，种类既多，颜色又复杂。许多草虫的翅膀是透明体，脉纹是网状，画起来，用淡墨钩轮廓和脉纹，可染些淡色。足多用浓墨画，后脚可稍淡。画整个草虫的顺序，是先画头，次胸腹，最后画足。翅大的草虫，如蝶、蛾等，先画翅，后画头、胸，腹、足各部。画白色或淡色的虫类用淡墨钩，四周用色或淡墨托出。

　　(1)蝴蝶的各种姿态

　　蝴蝶色彩美丽，姿态美妙，种类繁多，有红、黄、蓝、白、黑单色或间色。其中以彩蝶最为名贵。蝶大而美，为花卉画增色不少。

　　(2)蜻蜒的各种姿态

　　蜻蜒色有朱黄，墨蓝，蓝绿，黑色。翅透明有捆纹。大蜻蜒以朱黄，墨蓝为多，小蜻蜒则以蓝绿色占多。有集体多只同时飞行者，尤喜飞在水面掠过。

　　(3)螳螂的各种姿态

　　螳螂色有石碌色、赤墨色，以石碌色者占多。腹部浅黄绿，近节处略带浅红。背部翅有细纹。赤黑色者头色较深，腹部浅赤，近节处有浅蓝色线。

　　THE    TECHNIQUE   OF  PAINTING INSECTS

　　It is a very peculiar fact that Chinese painters used to paint insects into theirflower pieces. Lovely small insects always enliven the picture of flowers.

　　To paint an insect, first do the head, secondly the body and wings, and lastly the legs.  But to paint an insect with big wings, for example a butterfly, do the wings first and then the others. In the elaborate style use a small pointed brush to draw the outline and also the veins the wings and the shading and texture of the body. Ink wash or colour may be added later.

　　In general an insect has four wings and six legs. Those that jump grow strong hind legs, and those that flymay have big fore-wings.  When it flies upwards its body drops but its wings point up.  As its wings drop its body'tums up to keep balance.  It crouches to start to fly andwhile flying all its legs are pulled to its breast.  It stretches its legs when alighting on something.
