画《金瓶梅》，最为敏感的是如何表现涉及男欢女爱的场景。尤其对一个女画家来说，可能会承受更大的心理压力。但马小娟说，当她把《金瓶梅》反复看了多遍，也把自己的艺术创作思路理清楚了。这部小说对人性和社会关系都有深刻的揭示，并非世俗所谓的“淫书”这么简单。小说人物个性多样，情节曲折，能刺激画家的创作激情和灵感，可以放松地发挥自己的艺术想象力。至于男欢女爱的场景，不可没有，没有就不是《金瓶梅》了，关键在于如何把握分寸。“我不想画成赤裸裸的春宫图，也不想全部删成‘洁本’。”看马小娟处理这些场景的技巧，犹如高超的电影导演，既说明了问题、渲染了气氛，又不粗俗、不越轨。
