In 2010, Brian, Wang Lifeng and I went to Ulaanbaatar to check out the art scene. No wonder Mr. Wallace is an experienced curator and gallery owner. He soon organized Mongolia : Mongolia, which is composed of contemporary artists from Inner Mongolia and Republic of Mongolia. As a native of Inner Mongolia, I have the honor to participate in this exhibition!
Congratulations to you and your Red Gate Gallery on their brilliant 30 years in Beijing. They are precious memories and a monument for contemporary art and artists who grow up together!
Brian's Memory
Wang Lifeng and his friends Qi Mengguang and Wu Rijin were born in Inner Mongolia and they proposed a show of Mongolian artists. I thought it was a good idea, but said to them that we had better find some real Mongolians! So off we went to Outer Mongolia and ended up in Ulaanbaatar, the capital. By chance I had a very good introduction to a UB curator who introduced us to the art scene. She took us around to the studios of non-establishment artists. This underground art scene was suffering by being kept out of the mainstream which was very much controlled by the Ministry of Culture. The two camps were hardly on talking terms.
However, these artists were talking about the issues of the day – the impact of fast development, alcohol abuse, loss of traditional values and a yearning for some kind of spirituality. The Russians had a lot to answer for. We went to many studios, negotiating the wild traffic, the rather bland food, and the local vodka! Except for the vodka, I found the UB art scene in 2010 to be very similar to Beijing’s of the mid-80s. It was challenging, a little bit rough and full of possibilities. These artists had their pulse on the times.
We invited Khurelbaatar Batbaatar, Batzorig Dugarsuren and Tsulbaatar Edgerel to join the exhibition Mongolia : Mongolia. We had our Mongolians!
