高古玉通常指汉代及汉代以前的玉石器，时间约在距今2000年至8000年。新石器期间的玉器用料多为就近取材，主要用于祭祀，有着神秘的宗教色彩;商周至战汉期间的玉器多为帝王、皇家及达官贵人使用，玉料以和田玉为主，制造技术和艺术气息都笼罩着威严氛围。由于高古玉经历了神玉、王玉以及礼制用玉等时期，并与当时的社会环境、文明形态有着紧密联系，具有深厚的文化底蕴和艺术价值

高古玉形成于西周早期，是当时天子戴于胸前以示威仪的玉饰。至于当时制作玉饰的玉料也并不是特指某一种玉石，它有的取材于地方的玉料，就比如河南的独山玉，但大多数是取材于河床中的籽料。所以简单的说高古玉就是汉代以前的玉器，它并不是现代出现的新玉种或是其它玉石的别称，高古玉是我们直观认识古代文化的教科书。
