元祐通宝的钱币版别繁杂，已发现的品种有数十种之多。以现有宋代钱币著作和书籍统计，钱文书体多为篆书和行书，传为司马光和苏轼手书，形制为对钱，有小平、折二和折三，铜、铁质地均有。川、陕及河东地区（今山西太原一带），折三及以上钱币，铁钱居多，盖因当地富产铁矿有关，除有铁范铜外，主要是铁母钱。元祐通宝小平铜钱，版式亦有多种，除著名的背“陕”者篆书、行书钱文钱币，存世量寡少，为钱币珍品，亦有其它稀缺版式发现。
