开元通宝是唐高祖武德四年（621年）铸行的一种货币，是唐代流行时间最长，最重要的流通货币。币面上下右左有“开元通宝”四字，又有人上右下左回环读作“开通元宝”，有说此为为后世铜币以“通宝”或“元宝”为名的由来。

唐代开元通宝货币。钱币在唐代始有“通宝”，开创了新纪元，在钱币发展史上占有重要地位。唐初沿用隋五铢，轻小淆杂。唐高祖武德四年（公元621年），为整治混乱的币制，废隋钱，效仿西汉五铢的严格规范，开铸“开元通宝”，取代社会上遗存的五铢。最初的“开元通宝”由书法家欧阳询题写，形制仍沿用秦方孔圆钱，规定每十文重一两，每一文的重量称为一钱，而一千文则重六斤四两。从此，中国的币制正式脱离以重量为名的铢两体系而发展为通宝币制，成为唐以后历朝的铸币标准，沿袭近1300年。
