Silver dollar, originated in the 15th century, began to be cast in Europe, commonly known as "foreign money", "lace money" or "ocean", is a silver coin commonly known as the world's silver-based countries, the main currency in circulation, about the 16th century, silver dollar into China. But before the Opium War, as a kind of toy or collection of scholar-bureaucrats, it did not become a real currency. After the Opium War, they circulated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and Hebei, Guangdong, Fujian and other places.
Since the mid-19th century, although the Mexican silver dollar has gradually replaced the foreign currency, it has not yet fully established itself. Britain, which covets the market, naturally wants to take advantage of the situation to share the cake. Hong Kong ceded to Britain after the Treaty of Nanjing, and since its opening there has been no special currency, it has been using all kinds of currencies circulating inland in China. After governor Robinson took office in 1859, he actively sought to issue currency in Hong Kong in order to promote Hong Kong trade and replace the unstable Eagle Ocean. At the outset of the plan, the Hong Kong Mint had intended to replace the Mexican silver dollar with its silver dollar, but the government misestimated the situation and people tended to use familiar currencies.
When the new governor realized that the size of the Mint was far beyond his own needs, he wanted to sell the product to China and tried to monopolize the market for the best. In 1867, the Hong Kong Mint carved a prototype coin. In order to be more acceptable to the Chinese government, a dragon-shaped design symbolizing the Chinese emperor was adopted. At that time, Shanghai was an important emerging port. They mistakenly believed that the use of Shanghai Ping Fa was conducive to sales. Therefore, they used the words "one Shanghai two", which was the silver dollar collected by Zunhui this time.
At present, Shenzhen Guangu International has the privilege to collect one Shanghai one-two:
Collection Name: Shanghai Yiliang
Specification: 4.42cm in diameter, 29.6g in weight
This silver coin is exquisite, can be said to be a combination of Chinese and Western classics, in Zunhui collection of silver dollar front, our Chinese nation's totem five claws auspicious dragon stand tall, extraordinary, in the dragon around eight clusters of light-like lines, each of the two clusters have a word, separated in four directions, it is "Shanghai one two", in the coin. On the back, there are four slightly smaller designs engraved on the center circle, representing the British Royal Family and the Garde Medal. On both sides of the crown, there are two English letters, the origin and year of Shanghai, 1867 HONG KONG SHANGHAI ONE TAEL.
It is reported that the coin industry was the earliest to carry out textual research on the "Shanghai one two", and the concrete results are the Chinese mechanism of copper coin master Woodward. He began to pay attention to this coin in 1922 and published his research experience in 1937, which took nearly fifteen years. The conclusion is that "Shanghai one and two" is miswritten, should be "one and Shanghai two", "Shanghai" is a weighing unit, not a place name, that is, its original meaning is "one and two", not just in Shanghai. The specific historical reasons are beyond investigation in modern times, but the historical value reflected by this coin is undoubted. In recent years, silver coins have gradually occupied a place in auction houses, especially those that exceed 100 years.
