1966年出生的于凡是一个典型意义上的雕塑家。他用熟练的雕塑语言来叙述他对自我和外界的思考和询问,传达个人与社会之间的交流。早期作品在熟练的技巧的掩饰下,我们仍看到对形体和事物的认识和表述所难以逾越的障碍。如果说对物的在真正意义上的表述是困难或不可能的,可能做到的是什么?
在近些年的作品“银鬃马”2002、“圣塞巴斯蒂安”2001、以及更早一些时候的《哈罗-HELLO》1999中,无论这些作品的含义是含蓄的或是清晰的;是政治的、宗教的沉重,还是童话般的纯真,这一切都被神秘地处理成一种宝马轿车上所特有的质感和色彩,笼罩着一层眩目的、欲望的光泽。正是这种光泽将于凡从渴求表达的深谷中解放出来。早期作品中的晦涩和迟疑在这种光泽下荡然无存了。于凡将他多年来的功夫像一只狐狸一样藏了起来。在他为自己同时为我们精心塑造的世界里,精美塑造之物和其表相下的平庸寻常使我们不知身在何处。表象的“真实”和“虚假”又一次让我们流连忘返。于凡魔术般的将我们诱入他设下的圈套,并告诉你已经被迷惑。
于凡作品中那些为人们所熟悉的人物和事件或不熟悉的历史的情景迷惑着我们脆弱的神经。这永久的迷惑是我们企图回避而又寻求验证的艺术和人生。
A Game under the Floating Light and Skimming Shadow (Excerpt)
Born in 1966, Yu Fan is a typical sculptor. He recounts his thinking and raises queries about himself and the outside world in his skillful sculpture language, delivering communication between individual and society. Shrouded in skillful techniques, his early works demonstrate his understanding of both shape and form, and the obstacles that cannot be overstepped by expression. If it is hard or impossible to express an object in its real sense, then what is the alternative?
All of his recent works, such as "Horse with Silver Mane" (2002) and "Saint Sebastian" (2001), together with his early work "Hello" (1999), have been mysteriously endowed with the thick sense and color uniquely possessed by a BMW saloon car. They are covered by dazzling, desirable shine, whether the meaning of the work is implied or expressed, whether it has political or religious substance, or is as pure as fairy tales. It is this shine that liberates Yu Fan from the deep valley of stifled expression. Under the shine, the obscurity and hesitation in his early works is dissipated. Yu Fan hides his skills learned for so many years like a fox. In the world he creates for himself and for us, we are engrossed by his elaborate creations and the commonness lurking under the surface. We indulge ourselves in the "real" and then the "false" surface. Yu Fan magically lures us into his trap, and tells us that he has been mystified.
The familiar figures and unfamiliar historical scenes in Yu Fan's work confuse our fragile nerves. The everlasting confusion is the art and life we try to avoid but seek to validate.
