【艺·凯旋】对谈|李关关:“我关心的永远是视觉以外的其它感受”

    艺术家李关关近期在798艺术区艺·凯旋画廊举办个展「逐光」(Chasing the Light),这是自2013年艺·凯旋代理李关关以来,为其举办的第三次个展。

Artist Li Guanguan recently held a solo exhibition "Chasing the Light" at Triumph Gallery in 798 Art District. This is the third solo exhibition held by Triumph since 2013 when they represented Li Guanguan.

    对于这位出身于中国传统工笔人物画的当代青年艺术家来说,中国画的材料和技法只是艺术家描述方式的其中一种,她擅长用较为传统的媒介描绘所见之物。但对于李关关来说,描绘不等于记录,艺术不等于造型,正如她所言,“画家的职责是记录世界的表象,但是我关心的从来不是视觉的物像构成的我们的周围,而是视觉以外的其他感受,我可能在画荧光色的植物时感觉晕眩,可能在描绘动物时感同身受他们的情感起伏,他们是性感的,隐约的,又让人联想的。


For this young contemporary artist who was studied from traditional Chinese meticulous figure painting, the materials and techniques of Chinese painting are just one of the artist's description methods. She is good at using more traditional media to describe what she sees. However, for Li Guanguan, depiction is not equal to record, and art is not equal to modeling, as she said, " The painter's duty has long been to record the appearance if the world, but what I care about is not our surroundings formed by visual objects, but feelings beyong the vision. When painting fluo rescent plants, I may feel dizzy;when depicting animals,I’ m empathetic and may feel their emotinal ups and downs. They are sexy, vague, and reminiscent."

    令人好奇的是,李关关的艺术创作是从何而来?又是从何起步?距离上一次的个展已经过去了大约三年,新展览有何新变化?就此,艺术家与艺·凯旋画廊就这些问题展开了对谈。


Curiously, where did Li Guanguan’s artistic creation come from? Where did she start again? About three years have passed since the last solo exhibition. What are the new changes in the new exhibition? In this regard, the artist and Triumph Gallery started a dialogue on these issues.

Q:这次个展相较以往,还是呈现了不少变化,比如说题材多元化了。这次展出了一张人物肖像,应该是这么多年展览唯一展出过的吧?
A:是的,画的不多,这画的是一个波兰的艺术家。之前彭锋老师带我去波兰做展览认识的,他还来过我的工作室,他也很喜欢我画的这一幅肖像。除了这张,给女儿画了一张,其它还有两张人物,但没画完。


Q:Compared with the past, this solo exhibition shows many changes, such as diversified themes. There is a portrait in this exhibition. Is it the only one that has been showed for so many years?
A:Not much, this is the first portrait to go on public display. It's a Polish artist. I met him before when Prof. Peng Feng  took me to Poland for a group exhibition. He also came to my studio, and liked this portrait I painted. Besides this, I have drawn one for my daughter, and there are two other figures, but I haven't finished.

Q:我记得你是央美国画人物专业毕业的,当时为什么选人物专业?
A:我考的那一年央美国画只有人物画专业招生,所以我就考了人物。那个时候的央美国画系还没有基础部,花鸟、人物、山水这三个专业,当年哪个专业开就只能考哪个,每年都有变化,比方说今年开了花鸟,明年就开人物,后年开山水这样,考生只能考当年开的专业,没有办法自己选。我那年就人物专业开了,所以我就选了人物。
Q: 嗯,现在央美的中国画学院教学模式是本科一年级都是基础部,会把素描、传统技法、花鸟山水人物的通识性课程过一遍,第二年再自己选更具体的专业方向。
A:对,我下一届开始就有基础部了。因为能照自己的兴趣选,后来各个专业的人数也不像之前那样平均了。

Q:I remember that you graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts, majoring in Chinese meticulous figure painting, why did you choose it?
A: In the year that I took the entrance examination, the Traditional Chinese painting of the Central Academy of Fine Arts only had the enrollment of students majoring in figure painting, so I took the examination of figures. At that time,the School of Traditional Chinese Painting of CAFA had no Basic Courses Department for freshmen. Flower and bird, Figure, Landscape these three majors, which major recruit students in those days can take an examination of only which,and it changed every year. For example, this year opened Flower and Bird major, next year it was the turn of Figure major, the year after the Landscape such, the examinee can only take an examination of the major opened in that year, no way to choose their own. That was the year for Figure major, so I chose people.
Q: Yes, now the teaching mode of CAfA's Chinese Painting School is that in the first year of undergraduate study, students will take the general courses of sketch, traditional techniques and so on, and then choose a more specific professional direction in the second year.
A:Yeah, and then there is Basic Courses Department then. Because students can choose according to their own interests, later the number of each major is not as average as before.

Q:你原来上的是普通高中,快高考才报了个美术班。学艺术是高考前临时起意的吗?
A:因为我爸喜欢传统文化,在他的影响下,我也逐渐喜欢上了画国画和书法、最早接触差不多6岁。我爸一直都明白,他想让我走艺术家的路,他一直跟我讲,有个画画的学校叫中央美院,考大学的时候考这个学校吧。然后我也就没想过考其他学校了。

Q:你的导师是谁?为什么选他?
A:胡勃老师。当人物专业里面分工笔人物和水墨人物两个方向的工作室,当时我正好看了范宽的《溪山行旅图》,古人的用笔让山下溪水仿佛潺潺流动,我就立志学工笔了。

Q: You used to go to an ordinary high school, and you signed up for an art class soon after the college entrance examination. Is learning art a temporary intention?
A:Because my dad likes Chinese painting, so I started to learn painting and calligraphy since young age. My dad has always understood that he wants me to follow the path of an artist. He has always told me that there is a great painting school called the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Let me take this school when I go to college. Then I didn't even think about taking other schools.

Q: Who is your mentor? Why did you choose him?
A:Prof. Hu Bo. The Figure major was divided into two directions: the meticulous and the freehand. At that time, I happened to see Travellers among Mountains and Streams by Fan Kuan. The ancients used brushes to make the rivers flow like gurgling, so I decided to learn the meticulous.

Q:什么时候决定做职业艺术家?
A:刚毕业去中国戏曲学院做代课老师。陆陆续续地,去给学生上中国画人物技法的课。后来发现自己还是喜欢自己画画时候的感觉,所以就想专心画画不再去了。2013年开始跟兰芳姐(艺·凯旋画廊负责人)合作的。

Q:您从2011年开始画马,这些关于马的作品的名字我觉得都蛮有意思,都是以“二分之一”来命名,而其他的植物、无机物作品都是另外的名字。2013年《关驹》个展,彭锋老师给您写了篇文章《自我的镜像》,他分析您画的马是您的自我镜像,您认同这种观点吗?
A:我觉得他说的这个观点实际上适合每个艺术家,大家都一样,画的都是自己。我的马,植物、黑色的花儿,都是在画我自己,做一种自我探索和自我发掘。

Q: After graduation, did you go to the Chinese Opera Academy to be a teacher?
A:Just a substitute teacher, to give the students on the Chinese painting character techniques class. Later I found that I still liked the feeling when I was painting, so I wanted to concentrate on art creation and did not teach anymore.  In 2013, I cooperated with Ms Lanfang Li (Director of Triumph Gallery).

Q:You started to draw horses in 2011. I think the names of these works about horses are quite interesting. They are all named after "1/2", while other works about plants and inorganic things are all under different names. Is the horse just like your mirror of yourself? 
A: I think artists are all the same. They all paint themselves. My horse, the plants, the black flowers, are all painting myself, doing a kind of self-exploration and self-discovery.

Q:“二分之一”是题目的前缀,像“青潭”,“魍魅”这些后缀也很特别,有什么典故吗?
A :名字都是随机取的,我这个人就是比较随性。像“青潭”这个名字是因为之前朋友来我工作室说这马的眼睛像一汪清潭,就取名“青潭”了。

Q:“1/2” is the prefix for your most artwork titles,and it is also special for your suffixs such as "Qingtan", " Morbidezza", are there any allusions?
A:Names are all random, I'm just a casual person. Like "Qingtan (This is a Chinese pinyin meaning clear lake water.)" the name is because before a friend came to my studio said the horse's eyes like a clear pool, so named "Qingtan".

Q:植物为主的作品是最近画的吗?
A:疫情爆发之后在家里画的。当时我们小区管理特别严格,不让居民随便进出,2、3月份我一直在家,因为不能来工作室,只能画一些身边的东西。画的水果和红薯都是买的,买什么画什么。其他一些花草、芦荟是参照身边的植物画的。用的颜料,包括荧光色全是国画颜料里的。

Q: Were the plant-themed work recently painted?
A: Painted at home after the coronavirus outbreak. At that time, the management of our community was very strict, and residents were not allowed to enter or leave casually. I stayed at home in February and March because I couldn't come to the studio and could only paint things around me. I bought the fruits and sweet potatoes for the paintings. Some other flowers and aloes were drawn based on photos taken during a previous trip in the United States. The pigments used, including fluorescent colors, are all Chinese painting pigments.

Q:所以对于您来说,即便是学工笔人物画出身,但这并没有限制创作题材的范围,其实只是造型的问题,造型不一样,但其它都没有变,比如技法之类的?
A:对,都无所谓。

Q: So for you, even if you graduated from meticulous figure painting, it does not restrict the scope of the creation of the subject matter, in fact, it is just a matter of modeling. Modeling is different, but other things have not changed, such as techniques and so on?
A: No,it doesn't matter.

About the Artist



   1982年出生于山东,2000-2004年就读于中央美术学院中国画学院,现生活工作在北京。二分之一、三分之一经常是李关关作品使用的名称,题目在一定层面上体现出艺术家对视觉切入角度的潜在观念,某种程度上也是进入艺术家创作内在逻辑的思维路径。李关关提取水墨精神的特定元素,如气质、意态、诗性、远境,将它们带入创作的语境,也将图像方式的光感、质地、角度等视觉因素与其衔接,传递出安静与个性的气息,在图像如何散发气质的课题中提供了一个视觉切入的文本。


Li Guanguan was born in Shandong in 1982, studied at the School of Chinese Painting of the Central Academy of Fine Arts from 2000 to 2004, and currently lives and works in Beijing. 1/2 and 1/3 are often the names used in Li Guanguan's works. The title reflects the artist's potential concept of visually cut-in angle to a certain level, and to a certain extent also enters the internal logical thinking path of the artist's creation. Li Guanguan extracts specific elements of the ink spirit, such as temperament, mood, poetry, and perspective, and brings them into the context of creation. It also connects and conveys visual factors such as light, texture, and angle of the image mode with it. The breath of quietness and individuality provides a visually pleasing text in the subject of how the image radiates temperament.
