This summer, Rockbund Art Museum is seeking a group of talented individuals with musical experience for a unique opportunity to be part of an excellent exhibition. The world's leading and most innovative artist, Philippe Parreno, will have his first solo exhibition in China at Rockbund Art Museum. In this project, a team of performers will interact with visitors in various ways.

What is the exhibition and performance?

Over the past twenty years, Parreno has radically redefined the exhibition going experience by exploring its possibilities as a medium in its own right. Realised in dialogue with the physicality and functionality of the museum’s architecture, the exhibition will alter the building’s current existence through an unexpected use of time, space, light, and sound to become asemi-automated puppet, a perpetual motion of events in which Parreno subverts the conventions of the gallery space.

For the very first time, Parreno with dramaturge Asad will work with ‘dalang’ performer to operate the exhibition. A ‘Dalang’ refers to the puppeteer in an Indonesian Wayang performance; traditionally controlling the white screen and lighting that together create the shadow puppets that make up the performance.In this exhibition, ‘dalang’ performers will interact with visitors to the museum in various ways. They will help to set in motion the exhibition's components, from installation, sound, film, to moving elements, and will also have conversations with visitors as well as other dramaturgical elements.

Casting Criteria

1. With musical experience, deeply interested in music, i.e. playing a musical instrument, singing and composing.

2. No gender preference, aged over 18 years old

3. No need of any performance related backgrounds!!!

4. Bilingual (preferred)

5. Good voice (preferred)

6. Working Time: The participation is highly flexible over the three months from July 7th to September 17th but will be requiring for 12-16 hours per week on average (Museum closed on Mondays).

7. The participant should be charismatic and would enjoy the interaction with the audience.

Interview Schedule: 2017 / 06 / 27 – 2017 / 06 / 29.The artists are assembling this team beginning with meetings in late June.

Payment: 100 RMB/ per hour, 30 RMB lunch allowance /per day.

Philippe Parreno

A key artist of his generation, Philippe Parreno radically redefined the exhibition experience by taking it as a medium, placing its construction at the heart of his process.Working in a diverse range of media including film, sculpture, drawing, and text, Parreno conceives his exhibitions as a scripted space where a series of events unfold. He seeks to transform the exhibition visit into a singular experience that plays with spatial and temporal boundaries and the sensory experience of the visitor, who is guided through the space by the orchestration of sound and image.

For the artist, the exhibition is less a total work of art than a necessary interdependence that offers an ongoing series of open possibilities.

Based in Paris, France, Parreno has exhibited and published internationally. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Grenoblefrom 1983 - 1988 and at the Institut des Hautes Etudes en arts plastiques atthe Palais de Tokyo, Paris from 1988 -1989.

Parreno was awarded the prestigious 2016 Hyundai Commission at Tate Modern Turbine Hall, titled Anywhen the commission received international acclaim. Parreno was also the first artist to take over the entire 22,000 square metre gallery space at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris with his exhibition Anywhere, Anywhere Out of the World which opened in October 2013. Who is the creative dramaturge?

Asad Raza

Asad Raza (b. 1974, USA) is an artist and producer whose recent projects include Root sequence. Mother tongue at the 2017 Whitney Biennial, the home show at his apartment in New York, and installations at Frieze Projects (London, 2015), and the Ljubljana Graphic Art Biennial (2015). He served as a dramaturge for Philippe Parreno’s H{N)YPN(Y}OSIS at Park Avenue Armory, (New York, 2015), and the group shows A stroll through a fun palace (Venice Architecture Biennale, 2014), and Solaris Chronicles (LUMA Arles, 2014). Raza also recently co-curated the exhibitions Mondialité with Hans Ulrich Obrist (2017) and Decor with Tino Sehgal and Dorothea von Hantelmann (2016) at the Villa Empain in Brussels.
