Up in the sky—it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s SUPERMAN! Arguably the most iconic superhero in U.S. history, Superman was first created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Schuster in 1933, both were American high school students at the time. They sold Superman to Detective Comics (originator of the Batman series), now known as DC Comics. The first Superman comic book debuted in June 1938. An alien who crash-landed on Earth and has superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to fly, the Man of Steel soared to the pinnacle of popularity during World War II, where he was depicted defending freedom against the Nazi threat. Superman joins other DC Comic superheroes such as Batman and Wonder Woman in the Justice League. He first appeared on the big screen in 1978, with actor Christopher Reeve playing the role, and recent movies about the Man of Steel are portrayed by Henry Cavill. Superman remains a symbol of morality and justice and he continues to inspire comic books, video games, TV shows, and movies to this day. Want to learn more about Superman?
