My Favorite Books

1. Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
This is one of my favorite books from childhood, which I later had the pleasureof performing in the form of ballet. I will never forget the whimsy of thecharacters, and the audacity of Alice, the main character. It is one of thefirst books that taught me the fun that could be had with language.

2. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
I read this in high school for a class on science fiction, a genre I have lovedfor many years. This book depicts a dystopia governed not by fear but by viceand delight—a perspective I found especially compelling. The references toother books of canon are especially fun.

3. To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
This is a book I was given upon completion of one of my first university courses.I read it that summer while working in Costa Rica. The narrative is trulyunique, where for the most part of the book time passes very slowly over thecourse of a day, but for the middle part the story covers a ten-year periodvery quickly.

4. Amulet by Roberto Bolaño
I first read this short book in a comparative literature class on Latin America, and was blown away by the freshness of its story. It tells the fictional storyof a female poet stuck in a bathroom of a university as the Mexican army invadedit in 1968. But it is no drama in the traditional sense. With little dialogueand much imagination, this novel taught me that there is more than one way towrite a book—and many more ways to be emotionally moved by one.

5. The Collected Poems of Amy Clampitt
Amy Clampitt (born in Iowa) is one of my favorite poets, and the collection ofher poems is one I thumb through often. What I love about her is that shepublished her first full-length book of poems in 1983 -- at the age of 63 -- whichgives me hope for my own writing. Her poems are elaborate, beautiful narrativesof what might easily be passed up by many Americans, with many words andallusions I must often lookup.
