任颐(1840—1896),名颐,字伯年,浙江山阴(今绍兴)人。他是一名全才型画家,于人物、肖像、花鸟、山水无所不精,尤精于传神写照,早年师承任熊、任薰。是我国近代杰出画家,徐悲鸿将其推誉为“仇十洲之后,中国画家第一人。”任伯年的绘画发轫于民间艺术,他重视继承传统,融汇诸家之长,以自己独创的艺术,打破了当时专事摹古,陈陈相习的模式,形成自己丰富多彩、新颖生动的独特画风,丰富了中国画的内涵,因此在近代美术史上备受推崇。
