1971年,诺克林(Linda Nochlin)就发表过《为什么没有伟大的女性艺术家?》(Why have there been no geat women artists?)

In physics, the theory of Parallel universes has not been confirmed. According to this theory, maybe there is another universe besides ours, which looks like us. So, for female artists in China and western countries, whether they can be the Parallel universes for each other? For the westerners that is self-centered, whether Chinese female artists can only exist as the heterogeneity of others? For those Chinese female artists who are influenced by western culture, except for the difference in color, which aspects can their subjectivity be reflected?
In fact, it is not a hot topic that does research about female identity in Chinese art world. In the eyes of male artists or curators, those female artists' art works which with female characteristic are too delicate. While there are few theoreticians do research about female art from the perspective of theory. To sum up, we can boil the research about female art down to: exploring the change of gaze mode, the rediscovery of existential form and the reappeared form of gender difference.
The western world experienced feminist movements in 1950 and in 1980. In 1971, Linda Nochlin published Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? This caused the art circle’s self-criticism about exhibition politics. Is there any necessity for us to talk about "feminism" or "gender politics" today? The copyreader in art group of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, pointed out: Nochlin criticized male hegemony 40 years ago, which has not been changed in art circle. In 2010, the Museum of Modern Art in New York held an exhibition of abstract expressionism. There were 105 artists, only including 6 women. Most male artists exhibited a series of works, while female could only exhibit one work. The statistic data about a suite of art market and museum ecology shows: the opportunities for female artists to exhibit are very small, which is disproportionate to the number of female artists.
After European economic crisis broke out, "economy" has been the most important issue in western countries. This exhibition takes "feminism" as its theme, putting forward an issue which is far more complicated than "economy". Feminism once led directly to the introspection and deconstruction of western male hegemony, and became a discipline system. But the abstract thinking is more likely to be a tool for theoretical analysis. For women, the political issue and inequality still exist. So, mentioning feminism again, in fact, is the concern about the marginalization of vulnerable groups in art circle and art market. From the angle of historical text, it is very important to put feminism into history and analyze it in "politicized" and "de-politicized" ways.
This exhibition invites those female artists who are from China, Spain, Mexico, Germany, America and France, they will use video, film, installation, animation, interactive video, colored glaze and some other modes and media to show their different viewing modes and existential forms as women, letting us rethink "feminism", which is a flickering issue in art world.
