Listening to the Nature

The painting of Angelique Shidi helps us to re-consider the notion of professional painter and the professionalism in painting, that is, what is a true painter? What is the difference between painting as a profession or as a career on the one hand, and as one's life on the other? I think that the idea of "heaven and man being one" and "forgetting both the object and oneself", regarded as the highest state in eastern aesthetics, may be understood as the blending of the artist and her work in one. "Outwardly learning from the nature, inwardly appealing to the soul", it is more than appropriate to apply this to the description of both the person and paintings of Angelique Shidi.
It is my belief that painting could reveal its true quality only when utilitarian desires are deserted. Everything has a representation, which is realized by the artist in a unique way; and the true imagery comes at the moment of forgetting both the object and oneself. The bright colors in Angelique Shidi's painting unravel a supernatural space, like the cloud drifting above the sea with gleaming light, showing the poetic ideal of the artist in transcending reality, an ideal longed for by everyone living in a noisy and crowded city forest.
Angelique Shidi is not a professional abstract painter, nor an aesthete concerned with artistic language. She does not seek as her mission the evolution and change of the language. More exactly, she is able to go in and out of different artistic languages, and what she does more in her art is to listen to the response of her soul to the nature. She is convinced that art is capable of exerting an imperceptible influence on human soul, with a power to change the personal ways of life. She has a romantically idealistic spirit towards the time and life.
"One's mind is linked to the vast universe". Angelique Shidi's painting expresses, with free and unrestrained colors, her personal feelings, communicating of the spiritual synergy with the audience visually. As Mondrian puts it," life is shown as an incessant dynamism in balance… thereby the rhythm is dissolved in unity." It shows that although the life of human is subject to the flow of time, it is nonetheless founded on the balance of sensibility and reason.
Angelique Shidi is an accomplished jewelry expert, and her painting reveals her acute feelings and subtle appreciation of the jade. Moreover, it reflects her understanding of the oriental aesthetics, objectified through feeling. In ancient Chinese culture, jadeware is not only a symbol of social status; it represents more the traditional moral standard of China. Jadeware used to be part of stoneware, but it has turned into a stone of beauty – the gem. After the stoneware becomes the jadeware, the object itself is no longer a mere conventional tool; it is injected into a higher level of value and ethos. Almost all Chinese idioms with the character "jade" are commendatory. For instance, "jade is equivalent of virtue", "turn swords into jade and silk", "rather be a shattered vessel of jade than an unbroken piece of pottery", and it is a very special cultural phenomenon to take jadeware as the carrier of good virtue.
However,Angelique  Shidi's painting is not literature, nor ethic. She does not link gem and jadeware with the traditional moral to express the so-called nobility of the character; instead, she focuses more on the "growth" and "gradual change" of the gem, which has a longer history than the human in the natural environment. Those precious gems passed down to us are also lives; they sublime in high temperature and high pressure, and narrate, with their magic origin and supernatural beauty, the profound history and romantic stories. The painting of Wang Angelique Shidi unveils, from each individual life, the selfless endowment of the Great Nature to the vision and soul of humanity, and becomes a sincere aesthetic contract between the heart and the object.
If the gem can be seen as the essence of the nature, Angelique Shidi's painting is then the crystallization of her soul. Half asleep and half awake, she wanders in the picture frame; and between dream and reality, she walks in the bright world of colors. "In trance there is image", and if we borrow the anecdote of "zhuangzi's dream of the butterfly", we can say she has merged her soul with the painting. The imagery of colors in her painting seems to be the favor of chance, having a beauty of non-repeatability; yet, her comprehension of the scenery of the four seasons through her travels of the world and her subtle observation of the gem – the soul of nature –, has enabled her to glimpse at the mystery of the nature. The imagery of colors in the painting of Wang Angelique Shidi is the glorification of life by an oriental female; and it is moreover an instance of human reverence of the nature.
I expect her to further develop a new personal space in the field of oriental imagery.
