ENCOUNTERS:Artist Liu Ruowang

Roaring apes and ferocious wolves, Liu Ruowang continues creating artworks than embody independent primitive dreams. Their appearance is characterized by absurdity, however they metaphorically represent human nature. In Liu Ruowang's works, the feeling of pressure and tension contributes to convey sense of authority. Liu Ruowang adopts a distinctive and unique expressive language that belongs to the realm of what he defines as "a state of mind."

Liu Ruowang’s artwork titled Original Sin and placed at the entrance of Parkview Green FangCaoDi, represents a group of apes and embodies a tragic symbolism: apes cannot get rid of their identity, but they still yearn for a spiritual elevation and pray for salvation.

Q&A

What do you think of Parkview Green FangCaoDi as an art space?

I think it's a very interesting concept. If I want to go visit an art gallery, I need to prepare in advance and to study.

However, in Parkview Green FangCaoDi, there are restaurants, a cinema, cafes and many different commercial spaces. People can interact with these spaces, in the same way they interact, for example, with my earlier works Wolves are coming and The east is red. Any artwork, placed in a certain environment, through the communication and the interaction with the public, acquires new meanings and new expressive languages. I think this is very meaningful.

Art comes from life. I was arguing this a long time ago. Now also many experts share this opinion: they often criticize artworks that are too difficult to understand for the public.

I think that people not necessarily always understand art, and this should not be an issue. For example, sometimes they don’t understand it because they look at certain artworks partially, as if they start reading a book halfway. In order to achieve an understanding of art, people should grasp the whole artistic concept, the creative process and the ideas behind a work. So, there should not be a distance between art and the public.

What do you think of your works Wolf Coming and Original Sin being placed in public space?

Original Sin

At first, I just wanted the public to see my works. Afterwards, I changed and I further developed this concept: so, I started making works that interact with the public and that involve the viewers, almost making them get into the artwork itself. Rather than a sculptor, I would define myself an artist working with installations and making artworks that interact with the public and with the surrounding environment.

Through this artwork, my aim is to make people experience a sense of pressure and urgency, and not to make them happy.

When you first see the work, you might have the impression that it is not a complete work. At the beginning, it was displayed in Parkview Green FangCaoDi in the square below the ground floor. Coming Wolves and Original Sin were placed in two different periods and they looked like a complete work at the time. There was only one man among the 110 wolves.

At the time, my aim was that people who would walking inside, seeing countless eyes and mouths, noses and teeth around them, would feel a sense of anxiety. So, the idea was to make people experience the same frustration and pressure that they could feel in real life: the work was a metaphor for the struggle to survive. In this group, each element looks at the sky and does not interact with the others: I wanted to represent the solitude and loneliness among the collectivity.

In our modern society, material conditions are getting better and better; however, the environment, our lives and the feeling of existential happiness are being undermined. This artwork represents a large collectivity where each individual is frustrated, lonely and does not have any relationship with the others.

Everyone who is born in our era, is subject to the influence of the clash between the continuation of the traditional culture and the impact of new cultural elements. Our civilization seems to break away from the primitive human instinct but at the same time it is also driven by this primitivism. Liu Ruowang uses his works to show a deeper relationship between primitive desire and human ideal, which may be the first step to achieve a "harmonious coexistence between human and nature". His works are scattered in Parkview Green FangCaoDi. Now let’s walk in and experience artist Liu Ruowang's art world.
