 Ambush from Ten Sides

多人联展最难和最容易确定的便是展览主题，要么选取的词汇在当代语境中“言不由衷”，要么在文本的语法结构上会“牵强附会”。所幸，这次展览以历史典故“十面埋伏”为主题，自然还有另外两层的含义铺设。一是从参展人员上拟邀请十位艺术家；二是在地域环境（Area One Gallery）的经营战略的空间部署上，三则是从成语出处中探讨、梳理上海朱家角在地艺术家现状的纷繁样貌与其创作背后的语言逻辑及文献线索。

The exhibition theme is the most difficult and easiest thing to be determined for the joint exhibition because the selected vocabulary is either "insincere" in the contemporary context, or is "far-fetched" in the grammatical structure of the text. However, this exhibition is themed as "Ambush from Ten Sides" - a historical allusion, which naturally implies other meanings: firstly, ten artists will be invited from the exhibitors; secondly, it focuses on the spatial deployment of business strategy in the regional environment (Area One Gallery); thirdly, the current situation of local artists in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai from the sources of idioms and the language logic and literature clues behind their creations is explored and summarized.

作为壹域画廊-Area One Gallery 2021上海空间的开幕首展，此次第一回展览共选取“十位”在上海朱家角的中青年艺术家，他们年龄跨度从五零后到九零后，其艺术作品不仅具有“十面”独特的语言风貌和表现特征，同时，他们还是扎根于朱家角这一特殊场域的异质个体，并在各自创作的领地中“潜心伏艺”。

Ten young and middle-aged artists in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai are selected to exhibit on the first opening exhibition of Area One Gallery 2021 in Shanghai. Crossing the ages range from the post-50s to the post-90s, they do not only have a unique language and expressive characteristics of "ten-sides" in their artworks, but at the same time, they are also heterogeneous individuals rooted in the special field of Zhujiajiao, and they "devote themself to study art" in their respective creation domains.

全球疫情的反复反弹，无疑限制了日常展览活动的常态化进展，此种情况下，Area One Gallery在这样紧张而又令人生畏的条件下开启了他们全国的第三个主空间，并将这个空间设置在环境优美的旅游景点——上海市青浦区朱dcdt家角。从阿拉伯数字3而言，“一生二，二生三，三生万物”，三生，即有万物之中的十面含义。

The repeated outbreak of global COVID-19 undoubtedly limits the normal promotion of exhibition events. Faced with this tense and daunting situation, Area One Gallery opens its third main space in the country and set this space in a beautiful tourist attraction-Zhujiajiao, Qingpu District, Shanghai. From a numerical aspect, the Arabic numeral 3 represents that "One gives birth to Two, and Two gives birth to Three, and Three gives birth to all things", which means that everything has ten sides significance.

“十面埋伏”出自《抱妆盒》，意为设伏兵于十面以围歼敌军。其典故源于楚汉相争时期，中国历史上著名的“垓下之战”的项羽楚军中了淮阴人韩信的“十面埋伏”（徐州市九里山），从而一度丢失战斗主动权，于是便有了项羽后来所说的“天之亡我，我何渡为！且籍与江东子弟八千人渡江而西，今无一人还，纵江东父兄怜而王我，我何面目见之？纵彼不言，籍独不愧于心乎？”最终项羽在乌江自刎……

"Ambush from Ten Sides" comes from "Hidden in the Dressing Case", meaning to set ambush troops on ten sides to encircle and annihilate the enemy. The allusion originated from the period of Chu-Han. In the famous "Battle of Gaixia" of Chinese history, the Chu army led by Xiang Yu was hit by the "Ambush from Ten Sides" (Juli Mountain, Xuzhou City) designed by Huaiyin native Han Xin, and lost the battle initiative. At the end of the battle, Xiang Yu said, "God wants to destroy me, so why should I cross the Wu River? I have led eight thousand soldiers from Jiangdong across the river to the west, but now nobody returns. The people in Jiangdong pity me and let me be the king, now I feel too ashamed to face them. Even if they don’t say anything, don’t I have any guilt in my heart?", finally, he suicided beside Wu River.

朱家角艺术生态的形成与发展，是一种自然而然生长的野性状态，由于得天独厚的优质地理环境和便利的交通轨道，现已盘踞了众多艺术从业者和各式奇人异士，他们或居住在某一谧静的湖边边上，或集中于机器轰鸣依然在经营的铜管厂文化创意产业园，或隐藏在人潮熙攘的古镇某一角落，亦或是行走于夜幕降临的石阶之上……“十面埋伏”展览是壹域画廊在上海朱家角的第一回邀请展，也为接下来展出的多面艺术创作者埋下第一个伏笔，即是一种回响，而伴随着十位艺术家的集体亮相，我相信，此刻的发声也将会为朱家角的艺术生态对外发声注入一股新的生命力和艺术张力！

The formation and development of Zhujiajiao artistic ecology is a wild state of natural growth. Due to its unique high-quality geographical environment and convenient transportation, many art practitioners and all kinds of talents have come to settle here. They either live beside the lake, or are concentrated in the cultural and creative industrial park of the copper tube factory roaring with machines, or hidden in a corner of a bustling ancient town, or walking on the stone steps when night falls... As the first invitational exhibition of Area One Gallery in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai, "Ambush from Ten Sides" lays the first foreshadowing for the multi-side art creators of the following exhibitions as an echo. With the collective appearance of ten artists, I believe that the voice at this moment will also inject new vitality and artistic tension into Zhujiajiao's artistic ecology.

他的艺术实践专注于对日常生活的观察以及对过往生活经验的思考与总结，并通过相对虚无简化的视觉语言进行创作。作品曾参加约翰莫尔绘画大奖并被英国利物浦大学收藏。作品也曾被世界保险巨头瑞士再保险集团（Swiss Re）收藏。参加上海青年美术大展，八零后艺术档案等多个重要美术馆的展览。并举办五次个人展览《理想是怎样死亡的》，《喘息之间》，《窄洞》，《述》，《入海》。同时他还在可美术馆策划过两次大型展览《咫尺日常》《田字旁》。网络《不急电台》主持人之一。《不急宇宙》创始人之一。

北京现代管理大学客座教授，中国壁画学会会员，毕业于中央美术学院，工作生活于上海。曾在欧洲现代艺术博物馆获得，第十四届ARC国际艺术沙龙大赛奖。参加过多场国内外重要大型展览并获各种大奖，作品曾被多个重要机构和海内外藏家收藏。现工作生活于上海。

作品追求艺术思想的深度挖掘，并主张创作要有“思想知觉化”的特征。他的油画创作常借时事新闻、科技、潮流文化、古代神话等形象，以隐喻和意象化的象征手段表达对现实社会的批判和反思。

现任上海YOUNG美术馆馆长。独立策展人、艺术写作者。CONUTER-FEIT当代艺术双年展品牌创办人，猎质当代艺术展总策展人。Rainbow box project发起人，An Art Space策展人。主要从事中国当代艺术史论研究与写作、当代艺术批评实践、展览策划及独立艺术空间的创建与运营等工作。

Hui Shuwen, current director of Shanghai YOUNG Art Museum. Independent curator, art writer.
