What does painting mean for you?

Since I was a child, I have always randomly made sketches and drawings. I used to draw scenes of fights and pass them around with my classmates, or play tricks with sketches.

用笔画出图像，表达想法，对我来说就是绘画，绘画也成为了我个人的表达工具。就像有人喜欢文字，就用写作去抒发。有人喜欢理发，可以做出千姿百态的发型，我们可以用各种方式来表达自我。

Draw something with a brush and convey thoughts, this was painting to me, and it soon became a mean to express myself as a personal language. Some people like to write, and therefore they write to give a voice; others may find hairstyles make a significant statement, so they do haircuts. Self-expression can be presented through various forms.

What do you think about when you paint?

Given the fact that painting is a mean to express oneself, I try to collect all the joy and sorrow emotions in life, and capture the relationship between myself and the world. Painting, poetry, and other forms I used represented my confusion, for the world changes as I change my points of view, and the most important thing is to be honest about it.

When I paint, it feels like a meditation, focusing deeply on the connection between painterly practice and my thoughts. All the elements in the painting acquire their own life, as I blend myself into the painting until I become part of it. Slowly, a world takes shape and the elements on the pictorial surface merged into a harmonious and charming illusion.

I usually take time to think and collect information before starting to create a piece, such as making drafts, taking photographs, and drawing preparatory sketches of certain elements, and during the creative process I thrash out all the details. It is part of my professional practice, and it keeps me informed of what happens around me.

Have you ever tried to incorporate high tech instruments in your creative process?

The choice of media serves one's need for expression. An artist’s perspective and pursuits can be summarized in a particular form or icon, and can also be elaborated through various media, images, styles and series depicting personal visions of the world and self-perceptions. High-tech media is useful to display the expressive possibilities of new technologies, and they are milestones of the world’s development, but these are merely means. The real abundancy of creativity lies in individual’s uniqueness.

Who is your favorite painter and why?

I like Italian paintings from the 13th and 14th century, especially how the visual details were depicted. Just like reading poetry and literary works, every time I look at artworks from those times, I experience new discoveries and get inspired. Artists inspired me from that age includes Giotto, Paolo Uccello, and Piero Della Francesca. I imagine this is the greatness of art, how it awakes empathy. Like the modernist French writer Marcel Proust described in his fictions, the characteristics and modus operandi of people from different classes of the society can reflect the features of the society itself. The readers are able to find themselves “mirrored” in the fiction, and we still applause for its profound implications today.
