Using his hands instead of brushes, ripping rather than painting, Chinese artist Wang Jiang makes portraits of the figures of the moment, out of nothing but a piece of plain paper. Twenty-five-year-old Wang started studying paper-tearing art seven years ago and to date has created over 1,000 works. The inspiration for his works can come from dreams and fantasies, but his most recognised pieces focus on political figures. In light of recent events, Wang decided to do portraits of United States President Barack Obama and Osama Bin Laden. "I like to create portraits of famous people and the dancing human form. Also I follow hot issues and political news closely, for example, now Barack Obama and Bin Laden are receiving a lot of public attention, so I am trying to do their portraits," he said. Wang explained that paper-tearing is a very direct art form, but requires years of practice to depict a subject accurately without sketching an outline on the paper first. It usually takes ten to 15 minutes to finish one piece, but requires high concentration and delicacy to get it right. "All my artistic works are imprinted with my signature style and way of thinking. It's not only a way to make a living, but also a way to communicate with others. They express what I want to say," he said. Except for political figures, Wang also does portraits of celebrities, alive or dead, including Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee and David Beckham. Paper-tearing has been practised in China for over two thousand years, and is a branch of a traditional artform that involves cutting paper.
