Documenting the Landscape of Saint John Using Classical Chinese Ink and Wash Painting
Over the thousands of years of its development, Chinese ink and wash painting has evolved many techniques and modes of expression. In the past twenty years I have focused my attention on refining my landscape painting in this tradition of Chinese art and the natural environment in and around Saint John provide me with abundant opportunities to interpret this ancient landscape using traditional techniques though from a modern perspective.
Starting in 2009, I began to paint the landscapes surrounding Saint John using classical Chinese ink and wash painting techniques but restricted the palette to black and white rather than using color to express the beauty of Saint John. I created a number works that were painted mainly on accordion foldout books including on titled, Millidgeville Tucker Park Beach, which was recently acquired by the New Brunswick Art Bank. While painting those works, I developed a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural beauty of my new home. It has also inspired me to create more in this series so that there will be a more complete documentation of the diversity of landscape surrounding Saint John at the beginning of the 21st century. It has further inspired me to expand my vision by investigating other Chinese methods of presenting paintings in other formats such as standing screens, scrolls and fans.
The subtlety and simplicity of this classical Chinese ink and wash painting technique encourages the viewer to experience familiar landscapes in a unique way. In addition to seeing Saint John through new eyes, these works persuade the viewer to travel through the painted landscapes and to recall their own memories and experiences of them.
I believe that using this classical Chinese painting approach to render the natural beauty of Canada is very meaningful and introduces people to the specific charm of this tale-painting style.
