Blue Room is a new body of work created specifically for the UCCA space by acclaimed painter Yang Shaobin. It is a landscape of faces, a meta-portrait in blue, a close-up of a planet in crisis. Some of the images are familiar world leaders, policy-makers or players at the 2009 Copenhagen UN Climate Change Conference, while others are anonymous victims of climate change and environmental disaster, people living in poverty, or children facing a bleak and uncertain future.

In his well-known previous series of paintings, Red Violence, Yang Shaobin used red to express societal violence and blood-lust. In X-Blind Spot, he employed gritty hues of black, white, blue and grey to expose the plight of China's coal miners, and photo-negative effects to highlight our collective "blind spots." In Blue Room, he uses shades of blue and techniques of abstraction and close-up to address problems on a planetary scale, and to convey a form of violence that is more tacit, subtle and global. Under the artist's brush, the calm and soothing blue of earth, sea and sky is transformed into something melancholy, or perhaps menacing.

By placing the observer in the midst of a confrontation between power and powerlessness, present and future, ideals and expedience, Blue Room forces us to question our own complicity. Do we really believe that there is room enough for all of us in this small blue room we share? If so, how do we order our priorities, politics and policies so that no one, not even the smallest and most vulnerable, gets left behind?
