2010年6月,中国一代艺术大师吴冠中先生离我们而去了,这是中国艺术界一个重大的损失。吴先生的一生,可歌可泣,他把生命全部贡献给中国美术事业,直至耗尽了自己最后一点气力,但却为我们留下了一笔宝贵的艺术遗产。
我觉得,吴先生为中国艺术事业的发展起码作出三大重要贡献:
1.在中西文化艺术交融的大时代中为中国艺术的发展开拓了一条新路,不仅为油画中国化奠下了基石,同时为中国画现代化提供了新的表现形式;
2.他凭借自己数十年艺术实践中对东西方艺术的深刻认识和理解,真诚而坦率地提出一系列独特的艺术观点和理论,为当代中国美术的发展提供了方向性的指导,并产生了极为深远的影响;
3.他的一生,是把艺术置于生命之上。他几乎是把生命中所有精力投入艺术探索和研究中,为中国艺术界树立了一个虔诚艺术家的光辉榜样,对中国现代画坛产生重大的表率作用。
一代大师逝去,下一接棒人谁属?正当我们为一位伟大的前辈逝去感到哀痛,人们不期然会想到,吴冠中先生从艺一生,除了留下了许多不朽名作,亦总应该能培育出一些杰出的弟子和接班人。
事实上,自从吴先生1950年法国留学归来,虽然一直担当着美术教育工作,但由于当时的个人际遇和社会气氛并不理想,他的个人见解和才华并未得以充分发挥。直到1960年北京艺术学院成立,建立了吴冠中工作室。这段时期的吴先生才算真正能抒展己长,用自己的才学和理念专心灌溉栽培自己的学生。尽管他的入室弟子数目并不多,却有着出类拔粹的杰出人才。在当代中国画坛的数位入室弟子中,除了在国画界已负盛名的杨延文,如今最备受瞩目的就是油画界的王昌楷先生了。
王昌楷是吴冠中先生最早期的入室弟子。早在20世纪50、60年代,在吴先生艺术思想的指引和熏陶下,他已决心把终身献给中国的美术事业。数十年来,他始终如一地以行动实践他诚恳做人、勤恳创作的理念。在长期艰苦的艺术探索和社会历练中,他练就了深厚的绘画基本功和敏锐的艺术洞察力,同时铸就了中国艺术家的执著性格和中国知识分子的骨风。正由于他长期坚韧不拔的努力和奋斗,他终于在20世纪90年代中完成了自己艺术人生上最重大的艺术蜕变,建立了自己鲜明的艺术风格和独特技巧,并于2000年后进入艺术创作的成熟高峰期近年来,凭着一系列充满东方情愫、感人而高难度的作品,王昌楷被中外艺术界和收藏界誉为吴冠中先生最有大成就的弟子和“中国油画”的代表人物。
什么是“中国油画”?并非简单的中国人画的油画就称为中国油画,亦非以西方油画技法来绘画中国的题材就可称中国油画。 “中国油画”既称为油画,首先必须具有油画的属性,即要充分体现油画在造型、光、色彩和三维立体空间方面所具有的独特优点和视觉效果;同时,作品须有强烈的中华民族属性,即中国绘画讲究的笔触有效运用和不可修改性, 此外还必须具有中国人的审美意趣和思维方法,注重画外之意和画家情感的表达,即中国人所重视的意境。 在这些前提下,中国艺术家要把西方的油画脱胎换骨地演变成真正具有中国文化属性的油画新品种,实在是谈何容易。我们众多的前辈艺术家,近百年来曾为此不断努力探索,但始终仍未能取得完满成功。
直至吴冠中先生,他亦花了一生的精力才摸索出一条中国油画的新路,他发明的“土油画”具有强烈的中国属性,他走的是写实与概括、具象与抽象相结合的路线,景物表达至二维到二维半空间,色彩偏重中间调子。他巧妙地把中西绘画的元素大胆合成并取得协调,创造出一种有别西方油画的中国新油画品种,为“中国油画”的产生和发展奠定了重要的基石。
王昌楷则沿着老师的 “中国油画”之路继往开来,他选择的是写实主义和浪漫主义相结合的路线。他早在青年时代已对西方的油画技艺有透彻的了解,长期从事美术和教育工作练就了他扎实的造型能力和绘画基础;对色彩学的深入研究使他在创作中运用色彩得以游刃自如; 三维空间的景物描写更是他熟悉的强项。同时,王昌楷对中国传统绘画亦有深刻的理解,这与他出身于诗书画世家有着莫大的关系。因此,当王昌楷在思考中国油画的发展道路时,一方面他要把油画艺术中最重要的优点充分发挥,另一方面他必须解决笔触运用之准确性和不可修改性,并作为攻克的重大目标,挑战前所未有的难度。因这种高度体现中国绘画优势的笔法如能运用于油画创作上,则意味着中国油画的发展将在技法上有重大突破,并有别于西方油画的传统技法。
王昌楷先生是一位典型的中国文化人和忠厚的知识分子,他曾经历中国大时代的磨难和冲击。 然而,他却保存着一颗赤诚之心和一份对艺术的执著热爱,他视困难如考验,把逆境当做磨练,无怨无恨,积极乐观。他从长期的现实生活中悟出人生的真谛,并时刻为世间上种种现象寻求原因,最后发现和感悟出个中的内在因素、意义和规律,令他的修养和心灵升华至更高的境界。 而这种思想境界恰好在他的艺术中得到表现,使其艺术中的意象达到了更高的层次。 因此,解读王昌楷的作品往往会发现画面背后的深层意念和故事。 在欣赏他那亮丽的画面同时,亦可慢慢品味他隐藏在画里的情感。 王昌楷的作品富有浓厚的人文性和思想性,这正好是中国艺术独有的重要特色,亦是他的油画能成为中国式的油画,并受到中外收藏家广泛认同的另一个重要原因。至于王昌楷的艺术明显受到其恩师影响的亦有如下两方面:
其一,王昌楷在创作中,谨记了老师“风筝不断线”的教诲,他把艺术与生活紧密结合,坚持从生活中吸收创作灵感。他擅长从平凡的生活中发现不平凡的美,因此其创作题材极为广泛,从北国风光至海南风情、从名山大川到乡村牛羊、从山花野卉至雀鸟鱼虫,这种随手拈来皆画图的表现能力在当今中外油画界亦属罕见。由于其作品充满了浓厚的生活气息和强大的生命力,因而得以感染万千中外观众,并被誉为中国油画界中的齐白石。
其二,他的作品大多数源于生活,但绝非简单的景物再现,而是讲究严谨的构成和思考,这正是吴冠中先生创作中的绝招。王昌楷得老师真传,每当构思一幅作品,必先把画面结构想好,并突出主题焦点,当色彩关系和笔触运用深思熟虑后,再一举中的。因此他的作品清新明快、潇洒脱俗并耐人寻味,作品的格调和品味亦被提升到一个高的境界。
人的一生在人类历史的长河中都仅仅是短暂的一瞬间。至于如何选择自己的人生和追求,每个人都不一样。 综观当下,今天的中国正面临着高速的经济发展和社会财富的急速膨胀,对于中国现代艺术家们来说,目前已处于近百年来最幸运的时代。然而由于各种内外在原因,中国画坛近年仍出现了一片浮躁不安的现象,严重影响了中国艺术的健康发展。 面对这样的形势和环境,王昌楷仍一直保持着清醒的头脑,并珍惜每一天的光阴。他感谢上天对他的眷顾,让他能够成为一个艺术家,可以一辈子从事他最喜爱的艺术创作事业。 这正是一位真正艺术家最重要的情操和品格,使他能产生强大的动力去攀登一个又一个的艺术高峰。
数十年来,王昌楷先生继承了恩师的奋斗精神,他同样努力不倦地奋斗了大半生,终于不负前辈厚望,解决了前人尚未攻克的一系列难题,为“中国油画”的进一步成熟发展掀开了新的篇章。从此,在中国美术领域出现了一个真正属于自己的油画种类,它对油画民族化的进程具有重要的样板功能和学术价值,并对中国油画艺术的进一步发展产生深远的影响,这是中国油画发展史上划时代的突破和贡献。相信吴冠中先生在九泉之下亦会为自己卓有大成的弟子感到自豪、安慰和骄傲。
王昌楷的作品如诗、如歌,如一篇动人的故事,吸引着每一位观众,带给人们美好的艺术享受。近年来,他的一系列技艺高超、真情流露、魅力无穷的作品赢得了无数中外艺术爱好者的掌声和认同,其精深的艺术造诣,虔诚真率的艺术家品格更获得中外美术界和收藏界的敬重。
本年度深秋时分, 经过多年筹备,“王昌楷艺术巡回大展”即将在首都北京“中国美术馆”掀开序幕了。
这是一位虔诚的中国艺术家—王昌楷先生对老师吴冠中先生最大的敬意,亦是王老以自己亮丽的成绩单向广大中外艺术爱好者和支持者的真诚回报。这次活动得到中国美术界和各界人士的高度关心和支持,同时得到各地媒体和朋友们的热情协助。在此,我们谨表示衷心的感谢。借此机会,我们亦衷心地祝愿王昌楷先生保持身体健康,并以良好的体魄和旺盛的斗志继续为“中国油画”的发扬光大作出新贡献,为中国艺术争光,亦为世界艺术争光。

In June, 2010, A great Chinese art master, Mr. Wu Guanzhong left us, this is a major loss to Chinese art field, the life of Mr. Wu is so extraordinary, he contributed his entire life to Chinese painting art until he consumed the last energy, but left us valuable art legacy.
In my opinion, Mr. Wu has made at least three major contributions to the development of Chinese art:
1. In the era when Chinese and western culture and art collide, he explored a new way for the development of Chinese art, which not only set foundation for the Chinese localization of oil painting, but also provided new reflection manner for the modernization of Chinese painting;
2. Based on the deep recognition and understanding of eastern and western art accumulated in decades of art practices, he honestly and frankly proposes series of unique art perspectives and theories, providing directional guidance to the development of modern Chinese painting art and had extremely far-flung influence;
3. He have placed art above himself in all his life. He spend almost all energy in art exploration and research, making a glorious example in Chinese art field as a devotional artist, playing a major leading role in Chinese modern painting field.
The passing of a great master make people wonder who could be the next one? When we are feeling deep sorrow for the decease of the great pioneer, many people didn't know what Mr. Wu have left are not only the great masterpieces, but also some outstanding students and successors.
In fact, since Mr. Wu came back in 1950 after studying in France, although he was engaged in painting education work, but due to the not-so-ideal personal encounter and social atmosphere, his individual understanding and talents haven't been fully developed until in 1960 the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts and Wu Guanzhong Studio were established. In the period Mr. Wu could really use his talents and focus teaching his students with his ideals. Although students studied in his studio were not very many, but there were some outstanding talents. Several students active in modern Chinese painting field include the long-famous Yang Yanwen in the traditional Chinese painting field, and another most well-known is Mr. Wang Changkai in the oil painting field.
Wang Changkai was the earliest students of Mr. Wu Guanzhong. Back in 1950s and 1960s, under the guidance and influence of the art thinking of Mr. Wu, he had decided to contribute his life to Chinese art. For decades, he has always been practicing his ideal of honest behaving and hard work. In the long period of hard art exploration and social experiencing, he had trained deep and sound basic painting skills and sharp art observation, meanwhile he practiced the consistent character of Chinese artists and the vigor of style of Chinese intellectuals. Just due to his long hard efforts and working, he finally completed his major art transformation in his art life in 1990s, established his own clear art style and unique skill and entered the mature and peak period of art creation after 2000. in recent years, his series of works with eastern style touching and high skills make Chinese and foreign art field and collection field consider Mr. Wu Guanzhong as the most successful student of Mr. Wu Guanzhong and the representative of “Chinese oil painting”.
What is “Chinese oil painting”? Not just simply Chinese-pained paintings can be called Chinese oil painting, nor using western oil painting skills to pain Chinese subjects can be called Chinese oil painting. “Chinese oil painting” as oil painting firstly must have the features of oil painting, which means it must reflect oil paintings' unique advantages and visual effect in shape, light and color as well as the tree-dimensional space; meanwhile, the works must have strong sense of Chinese nationality, which means the effective use of touch and the not-modifiable feature of Chinese painting. Besides, they must have he Chinese appreciation of beauty and thinking manner, focusing on the meaning outside of picture and the expression of painter' feelings, which means the mental map highly regarded by Chinese. In such presumptions, it's really not that easy for Chinese artists to transform western oil painting into a new oil painting species with Chinese cultural features. Many of our pioneer artists worked so hard to explore in the last 100 years but failed to achieve complete success.
Until Mr. Wu Guanzhong, he also spend all his life to find a new way for Chinese oil painting, the “earth oil painting” invented by him has strong Chinese feature, he walked a route of combination between realistic and summary, concrete and abstract, expression of scene reached to two dimension to two and half dimension. The color tends to medium. He skillfully combine and coordinate the factors in Chinese and western painting, created a new Chinese oil painting species that differ from western oil painting, setting important foundation for the production and development of Chinese oil painting.
Wang Changkai continues to explore the route of “Chinese oil painting” after his teacher, what he chose is the combination of realistic and romantic. Back in young age he has had deep understanding of western oil painting skills, the long period of painting art and education work trained his solid shaping skill and painting basics; the deep research on colors enable him to use color freer in creation; description of three-dimensional scene is his advantage. Meanwhile, Wang Chaokai also has sound understanding on traditional Chinese painting, this has much to do with his family of scholars. Therefore, when Wang Changkai think about the development road of traditional Chinese painting, on one hand he want to fully explore the most important advantages of oil painting art, on the other hand he must solve the accuracy of touch and the not-modifiable feature, as the important goal to conquer, challenging the unprecedented difficulties. Because if this high reflection of Chinese painting advantages are used in oil painting, it means significant breakthrough in terms of skills in Chinese oil painting and which is different from traditional skills of western oil painting.
Mr. Wang Changkai is a typical Chinese cultural person and a generous intellectual, he suffered from the hardship and impact in Chinese big time. However, he cherishes a pure heart and love to art, he consider difficulties as testing, hardship as training, he had no complaint and always optimistic. From long period of life he understand the essence of life and in every moment find reason for all kinds of phenomenon, and at last find and understand its interior factor, meaning and rule, which enable his training and mind ascend to a higher level. Therefore, when appreciating Wang Changkai's works, people often find the deep meaning and story behind the painting itself. During appreciating his bright paintings, people could also slowly taste the emotions hidden behind the paintings. Wang Changkai's works have deep humanity and thinking, which is just a unique characteristic of Chinese art and also another important reason why his oil painting could become Chinese-style oil painting and have broad recognition by Chinese and foreign collectors.
Regarding the art of Wang Changkai, it is affected by the influence of his teacher mainly in the following two aspects:
Firstly, in the creation of Wang Changkai, he remember the teacher's words of “kite with string connected”, he combines art and life, insist on absorbing inspiration from life. He is good at finding extraordinary beauty in ordinary life, therefore his subjects for creation is extremely wide, from North China scene to Hainan view, from great mountains to rural cow and sheep, from wild flowers to birds, these kind of spontaneous reflection capability is really rare in current Chinese and foreign oil painting field. Because his works are full of living atmosphere and strong vitality, so it moves thousands of Chinese and foreign audiences and regarded as Qi Baishi of Chinese oil painting field;
Secondly, his works are mostly from life, but it's not just reflection of scene, but prudent constitution and thinking, this is also the strength of Mr. Wu Guanzhong, Wang Changkai learned that from his teacher, whenever conceiving a piece, he must well conceive the structure of picture and outline the focus of theme, after color relation and use of touch is well considered, then complete it at once. Therefore his works are fresh, bright, elegant and intriguing, the style and taste of works are also enhanced to a high level.
Everyone's life is just a temporary moment in the long river of human history, regarding how to choose his/her own life, everybody has different answer, China is currently facing high-speed economic development and rapid explosion of social wealth, for Chinese modern artists, they are at the most fortunate time in recent 100 years, however, due to various internal and external reasons, Chinese painting field had many unrest phenomenon in recent years, which severely influence the healthy development of Chinese art. Facing this situation and environment, Wang Changkai is still able to maintain a clear mind and cherish every day of life, he is grateful for the preference of destiny, enabling him to be an artist and to engage in the loved art creation for all his life, this is just another most important character for a true artist, enabling him to have strong power to climb one after one peak of art.
For decades, Wang Changkai inherited the hard-working spirit from his teacher, he also worked hard for all his life, finally not to disappoint the predecessors, he overcome series of difficult issues and opened a new era for the further mature development for Chinese oil painting, since then, Chinese painting art field has a oil painting specie that truly belongs to China, it had significant sampling function and scholar value for the nationalization of oil painting, and had far-flung influence on the further development of Chinese oil painting art, this is a historical breakthrough and contribution in the history of Chinese oil painting development. Mr. Wu Guanzhong must feel proud, comforting and honored for having such a successful student.
Wang Changkai's works are like poem and song, attract every audience like a great story, bringing people great art enjoyment. In recent years, his series of highly skilled, emotional and charming works have been applauded and recognized by many art fans from China and abroad, his delicate art achievement, devotional and honest artist style obtained even more respect from Chinese and foreign painting art field and collection field.
In last autumn this year, after many years of preparation, a "Wang Changkai Art Tour Exhibition” held by the government of Hainan Province, the second homeland of Wang Changkai and collectively organized by Yunfeng Art circle Gallery and Hainan Taida, Meilidao Gallery is about to begin at the “Chinese Art Gallery” in capital Beijing. This is the biggest honor Mr. Wang Changkai, a devotional Chinese artist, to his teacher, Mr. Wu Guanzhong, and also a honest return from Mr. Wang to the broad Chinese and foreign art fans and supporters with his own outstanding achievement. This event received high concern and supports from Chinese painting art field and people from various ways, meanwhile received warm assistance from medias and friends in different places. Hereby I have my gratitude for them. Taking the opportunity we also sincerely hope Mr. Wang Changkai have a good health and have excellent body and high spirit to continue making new contribution to Chinese oil painting, obtaining honor for Chinese art and the world's art.
