The Kuantu Museum of Fine Arts of our university (KMFA) sees multi-disciplinary exhibitions as an important topic for discussion in contemporary art. When exhibitions are not limited to specific styles or media, it is astounding what extraordinary aspects of art are brought to light.
We are delighted to have celebrated Chinese experimental ink painter Zhang Yu exhibit here. In the late 1980s, Zhang Yu began experimenting in ink painting, becoming a founding force in the experimental ink painting movement. Since then, he has been praised with innovating in styles and establishing new theories in ink painting.
Like the mission statement of the KMFA, Zhang Yu focuses on taking traditional culture as a starting point from which to seek new opportunities for development in art. Although early on Zhang Yu was taught traditional techniques at an art school, throughout his career he has striven to move away from the rigid traditional perception that ink painting gives audiences. When painting, he searches deep within his soul with a monk-like spirit of self-cultivation, and unrestricted by style, he creates new features in art. This innovative way of thinking that strives to break free of tradition and the putting of this into action are precisely what the Taipei National University of the Arts continually seeks to learn from.
I am confident that everyone who sees this exhibition at the KMFA will come away appreciating the profound reflection and the painstaking effort Zhang Yu puts into his art. In addition, I am certain that they will without a doubt experience a presentation of truly ground-breaking ink painting.
