【OCAT Shanghai|About Works】 HERE & ALBUM series by Lau Wai

HOME STORIES

In the second chapter, the focus lies more on a territory or an environment that holds an important place in the biography of the artists. Lau Wai and Anne Golaz investigate physical spaces as a form of individual expression. The traces which people have left behind, objects and even the specific ambiance of a room reveal themselves as part of the photographers' identity. The story presented by Zeng Yi Cheng is a love story, a very personal visual poem. All these works also deal with the passing of time and try to find coherence or meaning imatchn a world full of incomprehensible fragments. Past and present are mixed in an intricate way.

“HERE” & “ALBUM” series

“Home", "Here"?

From photographing my parents and our immediate surroundings, I soon started to have new discoveries on everything that I thought I was familiar with. I realized that “home” has actually been a place that was both familiar and foreign to me. I do not have an adequate understanding of the past that my parents had before settling down in the city of Hong Kong, as well as the reason for choosing "here" to be our home.

Migration

The family album salvaged during their migration process enables me to learn about the unknown as well as the progress thereafter from the past. Simultaneously, I am stepping into their past experiences and reminiscing the lingering traces of their hometowns and different locations they have moved to according to what they described, which includes Qingdao, Beijing and the Great Northern Wilderness where my mother respectively spent her childhood, her teenage years and was sent down to countryside for hard labor during the Cultural Revolution; as well as Tianjin - my father’s home town. Each place has held its unique position in my parents’ past, and through this process of parallel understanding, I aspire to learn more about them, as well as the relationship between their past and the present.
