Insights into Legends
Wilfrid Dube
Xuan Yongsheng is particularly a master of the delicate and extremely refined art of drawing with the blade.
This series of watercolors is a fresh and revolutionary insight into the meaning of the Chinese collective unconscious. It is more than just casual. This selection of Xuan Yongsheng’s work which covers three years ( 2008~2010) expresses a free, liberated, iconoclastic look at the traditional legendary characters taken from Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, The Tale of the White Snake. They are symbols of opposing forces of nature. A very personal, intimate and exuberant ink and brush expression - sometimes shocking and rash - of the icons of the past actually present in the mind of the artist.
As a spectator I respond to what I see and I seek to find meaning. What I see is real, tangible, and the images, impressions, feelings an artist has chosen to reveal to both the eyes of my body and those of my soul. In doing so Xuan Yongsheng remains faithful to the Chinese tradition of brush and ink. He combines figurative and abstract art. He explores with honest abandon and insight the legendary characters along with the naked truths that hide behind them. I think Xuan Yongsheng can repeat what the artist Wu Guanzhong said to Sullivan (p. 29) When I take a brush to paint, I paint a Chinese picture.”
