This exhibition will act as a comprehensive survey on Liu Fengzhi’s creative impetus on portraiture. The exhibition is divided into three sections chronologically—from the early portraits he created in Harbin during the late 1980s to the early 1990s; a series that depicted his wife, children, and friends which he embarked on after his move into the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village in Beijing; to the late self-portraits and portraits of historical figures he created in his Songzhuang studio.

Liu Fengzhi was born in Harbin, China, in 1964, and died in 2017. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Harbin Normal University and moved into the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village in Beijing in 1993. With the introduction of modern and contemporary Western art into China in the 1980s, Liu’s early works are deeply entrenched in the aesthetic influence of the European Post-Impressionism. In 1993, he moved from Harbin to the now-historicized Yuanmingyuan Artist Village in Beijing, which sparked an evolution in his career. After countless experiments with paint and styles, Liu Fengzhi arrived at this unique, singular artistic style in his works after 1995. His paintings are often characterized by a frenzy of lines that are free from the restraint of color, manifesting itself as contours and outlines, while sometimes existing as an untrammeled entity that floats and swims across his canvases boundlessly. His styles conjuring up almost a visual diagram that indicates one’s psychological activity, constituting images that are often extremely dynamic and brimming of life.

Liu Fengzhi’s portraits encompass an abundance of subjects, ranging from his family members and friends to historical and cultural figures. The most frequented subject in his body of portrait is his wife Yingai, and most of them are painted from life, which includes Wife, one of his most iconic portraits. Painted in 1996, the work depicted his wife knitting a sweater while standing. In the composition, his wife holds two knitting needles, cladded in a beige sweater and multicolored pants, with her feet bare, immersing herself in the process of knitting a sweater for her loved ones. With the thoughtful composition, the artist deftly captured the meticulousness of the knitter’s hands, reflecting her gentleness and dexterity through the painted details of the hands. According to Xu Yingai, the artist’s wife, the sitting sessions often lasted for an extended period, and the artist always painted her while she was doing chores around the house, revealing Liu’s subtle, yet deep, affection for his wife.

Liu Fengzhi’s gesture is bold in its handling of lines and shapes, which bestows him the ability to capture the essence of his subject. Unlike his abstract works, which are often characterized by his employment of large, saturated color patches, his portraits incorporate a rather muted and softer palette, with spontaneous compositions that are imbued with personal emotion and subjectivity.

This exhibition will be opened until October 25, 2020. On this occasion, Triumph Gallery will present a series of academic panels centering on the practice of portraiture within Liu Fengzhi’s artistic career.

About the Artist

His works have been widely collected by collectors around the world. Whether it is landscape painting or portrait, Liu Fengzhi's works contain strong subjectivity and emotional features. With free and loose brushstrokes and lines, he pulls away the original volume of the object, especially with the help of lines that twists, turns, hovers, reciprocates, sways, and gathers, closely responding to the transient emotional changes. He further presents and delineates the subtle and unobservable mental process, in which, reaching a highly abstract state.
