Do you enjoy the work and life in China? Of course! I am still here (laugh) China can be challenging to live and work in but the energy and the dynamism is great and make it worthwhile. How did you develop interest in traditional Chinese tricycle? First time I came to China (2008) I staid in Hongqiao area. There were lots of 'sanlunche'. I was quite amazed by this small and simple vehicle that could become so many things: a delivery cart, a shop, a restaurant, etc. I was impressed by their variety and the talent of their owners to display products and to wrap voluminous loads on them. I felt this element was part of the DNA of the city and still is today. As I was already interested in moving sculptures it seemed to be a perfect base for a new piece. THE BEIJING LION is really funny, why did you want to carry the lion on the back of a traditional Chinese tricycle? We were invited with my wife, Aloÿse de La Ronde, to participate into the 'Lions Biennale'. 50 life size lions were sent to 50 artists. We received one and we had to create a piece with it. In China lions are often represented in pairs seating on each side of the doors as guardians. The one we had was in the walking position. We thought it would be interesting to make it a mobile piece, creating a contrast with the heavy seating ones and illustrating in a way the fast changing and transforming local context in China. VISAGES, did you paint all the faces? Do they like the faces ? Yes, since 2007 I painted and photographed around 100 people. For the model to be painted is always quite an experience. You cannot recognize yourslef when you have the paint on. Most of the time people really enjoy the process. What is the meaning of M2B? M2B is the initials for the process of this project I initiated in Beijing in 2011. It was supposed to start as a 'M.U.K.S.' - Mobile Urban Kinetic Sculpture - and to turn into a 'BEKS' - Butterfly Effect Kinetic Sculpture - which was a stationary interactive kinetic installation. The idea was to have a MUKS that would turn into a BEKS, from MUKS to BEKS. I kept the first letter for each step and turn the 'to' into '2' and we get M2B. The project actually started with BEKS and turned into a MUKS. But I kept the initial name. |
