VERNACULAR DWELLINGS
Their History, Source and Development
History flows by like a deep and silent river. Traditional vernacular dwellings, developed in times technically, economically and culturally far different from today, began to decline when western technical methods such as the use of reinforced concrete started to gain ground. Slowly but surely they are disappearing from the face of this ancient land. Their rich heritage, however, can be drawn upon even today if we concentrate on grasping their inward essence and avoid blindly copying their external appearance. As an ancient Chinese poem exhorts: "Play not music of past dynasties: sing instead the revised song of willow twigs." Only thus can the elegance, grace and artistry of these traditional dwellings be mirrored in those we build today.
