Vulgarseries“Sothe un-wanting soulseeswhat's hidden, andthe ever-wanting soulseesonly what it wants.”―Lao TzuAllthe arts, including movies and television, have great power to raise the mindand heart to contemplation of the human condition. The Seven Deadly Sins havebeen represented thousands of times throughout Western art history, but todaywe live in a very different society that encourages lusting after celebrity andmoney. Philosophers since Aristotle have discussed this question. The term“moral virtues” refers to the character traits that are helpful or evennecessary for a well-lived life; moral vices are those character traits thatare obstacles to living well. Looking analytically, the ethos of the worldseems to be now "make money and become rich," "materialcivilization," "profit and efficiency;" and "material stimulation."Unhappypeople are more likely to chase money and fame; chasing money and fame reducesa sense of well being because more satisfying experiences are ignored, andextrinsic goals and poor sense of well being are symptoms of something elseamiss. The news media uses lust, money, sex to tap into people’s desire forsurvival. They sell people the idea if they have all the money and sex appeartheir future will be secure.Themeaning of the “Vulgar” series is to remind people of values like the Truth, the Good, and the pursuit of Beauty. Dong Dafeng reveals, through this powerfulseries, his critical concepts towards a society driven by power, money, andcarnal pleasures; his series bring to attention the fact that these“vulgarities” represent a real disaster for any nation. His abstract satire ismeant to awaken people to embrace the true values again, to warn everyone andfuture generations that love, respect, fairness, honesty will slowly disappearin a world guided by money, power, and manipulation.DongDafeng’s abstract ink compositions are powerful both for their dynamicbrush-strokes and for the symbols used by the artist: the Chinese character人becomes the icon for the concept of “prisoner”, people are the prisoners ofmoney and power nowadays; another symbol that for a foreigner looks like an Acircled by dots derives from the character 权(Quán) meaning right, often interpreted in modern China as “power and personalinterest”; and it is well known, obviously, the symbol of money for theofficial currency of the Qing dynasty, China's longest and last dynastic rule, now used as lucky charms. The round shape signified heaven and the squareopening symbolized earth. The artist emphasizes these symbols in each and everypainting by placing them very carefully in the overall compositions in order toacquire full visibility and hence transmit the message. Those graphisms becomeironical illustrations of “flowers”, “earrings”, or body parts (“heads”,“eyes”, “mouths”) showing the artist’s strong desire to emphasize that areeverywhere, that this “infection” is spread and we really have to stop it.Letus take a moment to admire Dong Dafeng’s works, think about their powerfulmessage, and collect them!
