Gaze after the Swan Goose

Liu Qinghe,in my impression,is “half crazy, half cunning”. The former means that he is persistent and dedicated in ink and wash art,not like his ease when talking and joking with others in daily life. The latter means his frankness, simplicity and optimism towards worldly life, which is shown in his joking figure shapes with real temper. Though with the old sayings “It is easy to play the banjo but hard to gaze after the swan goose”,Liu Qinghe presents his sentimentally attached, elusory and perplexed mood at the sky and clouds through subtle sight of figures in those“City Ink and Wash paintings”.

Liu Qinghe disdains to cast a look at that unalterable mode away from life reality. He summarizes his work as concern about current life in his power, highlights the permanent themes of human and life with feeling, thinking and lifestyle of ink and wash. He does not describe specific city life scenes and events, but stresses upon expressing fastidium, helplessness and hollowness of city life. As an excellent contemporary portrait painter,he knows that trying to completely and delicately describe spiritual life of modern people is an unrealistic dream, but he can control his passion from a personalized angle and silently watch the swimmer in modern city life trend. Therefore, when realizing that painting will have limit on subtle expression of psychological changes of modern people,he devotes in greater passon to observe endless thoughts and personalized secret tropism hidden behind the faces of modern people, reveals business and leisure everyone can see, presents us that soul tracks deep in people’s hearts.

Therefore,it reminds me of Ode to the Goddess in Luo River by Portrait Master Gu Kaizhi in East Jin Dynasty,in which the little son of Cao Cao,Cao Zhi looked at his lover at the other side of Luo River, watering floating and exuding tenderness and love, seemingly coming and going, her silhouette and eyesight conveyed a kind of infinite melancholy within sight but beyong reach. This charming goddness can be regarded as a metaphor of the modern society based on capital power. We wake up every morning from deep sleep, recall those unanswerable and odd scenes and disturbed moods in dreams, walk out of homes with self-inebriated courage, merge into rivers of city streets and stagger forward. With those youth-flowing girls in water,Liu Qinghe showcases his efforts in art to detain life, subtly taking us to a world of illusion. Regardless any kind of secrets inside the eyes of these children and girls,we can directly figure out their hearts from face-to-face looking. Just regard Liu Qinghe’s works as a mirror,we can see both surviving status of others in our times and our graceful bearings. It is noticeable that the images of water and net everywhere in Liu Qinghe’s paintings express modern people’s contrary desire for captivity and extrication, restriction and freedom. Anyone with ideals but binded by realities can taste out the helplessness and hardship of life inside.
