商英近三年来艺术创作的注意力放在了世界之巅西藏。他2011年第一次踏上那片高原即被她那“原始状态的空灵和神秘击中心灵”!青藏高原那也是我魂牵梦萦之地。我也被她所吸引,多次投向她的怀抱。我完全体会商英被击中的感受。他如同一位追梦者一次再次踏上那片神秘圣洁的高原。今天呈现在我们眼前的这些作品便是他追寻梦境的结果。
这些作品向我们展示了商英心中的圣境。他的向往在这些作品中绝少人迹,多是苍茫辽阔的大地与湖泊。他喜画湖。明亮平静的湖面与乱云舞动的天空,形成强烈的对比。他所绘的湖常常是画面耀眼的光之源。商英的画是他主观的表现而非客观之再现,当他初对如此景色时“感到了对景写生的苍白和无力”,而他在一年之后将巨大的画布搬到了高原圣洁的湖畔。他似乎要进入梦境,希望自己的内心,手中的画笔,在真实的梦境中合而为一。商英的画呈现给我们的是他个人私密的内心世界,他的人生体验,他的生命感悟。从中我听到了他在原始荒野中的自我搏击之声和去追寻在现代文明中迷失自我的脚步声。商英的追寻不禁使我想到前行路上的那些先辈:梵高,高更和塞尚……现代人何至于此?工业文明现代科技改变了人类的生存状态,物质生活的极大发展却使人迷失了精神的自我,迷失了生命航船的方向。用什么去拯救如此堕落与消沉的当代文化精神呢?商英迈出了他的脚步在世界屋脊上去追寻答案,而他三年来的作品便是他内心苦苦寻找的结果。观看这些作品带给我们的却仍然是那被先人追寻了千万年的人生古老命题:“我们是谁?我们从哪里来?我们将往哪里去?”

Exploring the Self
Tibet, top of the world, has become Shangying's focus of art for the past three years. He was immediately overwhelmed by "the pristine, ethereal and enigmatic atmosphere" after he arrived there for the first time in 2011. The Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is also a land of my dreams. Having been there myself more than once for her irresistible charm, I really understand Shangying when he was struck by this land. Once again he stepped on this magic and sacred plateau like a dream chaser. The works on this exhibition are actually what he collected from this trip to his dream.
These works, mostly featuring the less-travelled vast land and lakes, unveil the holy territory in Shangying's inner world. His preference for lakes is manifested in the sharp contrast between the bright and calm lake and the restless sky, the former usually becoming the source of the strong light in these painting that are subjective expression rather than objective reproduction. He was, for the first time, "too weak and vulnerable to paint from life in front of such landscape" when he first arrived, but he managed to place the large canvas by the sacred lake a year late. He seemed to be entering his dreamland in the hope that his inner world and the painting brush would be in the reality of a dream. These paintings, while opening a window to his private world, his life experience and to his reflections about life, reveals us how he tries to explore by struggling with his self in the wilderness and searching for the lost soul in the modern world. His pursuit reminds me of those great masters on the road prior to him, like Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, etc… Why are we here? Industrial civilizatition and modern technology have changed our state of life, but the great advance in material life has led us astray in the mind. What can we resort to if we want to salvage our degraded and depressed contemporary culture? Shangying made his effort to quest on the top of the world, so these works he did in the last three years attest to his painstaking pursuit. What these works bring us, however, is still the question that our forefathers have kept asking for millions of years: Who we are? Where did we come from? Where are we heading?
