当第一位现代人把一堆树枝拼在一起做成一小片屋顶时，理论上来说他已经是土木工程师了。

在今天，土木工程师被赋予了更大更多的责任。他们设计建造桥梁，摩天大楼，住宅，大坝甚至游乐场里的过山车。他们也参与设计复杂的交通和供水系统，以及管理工程项目的信息系统。

一般来说喜欢土木工程专业的学生擅长科学和数学专业，同时热衷于通过创新，维护，更新社会基础设施而服务社会大众。

土木工程师也一定要擅长评估风险并且确保设计的百分之一百可靠度。毕竟建造摩天大楼，悬索桥，饮用水供应系统是不能忍受丝毫过失的。）

在美国的大学里，本科期间学生们就有机会选择土木工程专业的具体方向，比如基础设施建设方向，交通路桥工程方向，环境水力/水文/水资源方向或者只是一个综合的土木工程方向。

#EducationUSA Talking Majors# The first Homo sapiens who put a bunch of sticks together to get a roof over their heads were, in a way, civil engineers. Today’s civil engineers have more responsibility than ever. They design and build structures such as bridges, buildings, dams, and even roller coasters. They also devise complex systems such as transportation and water supply networks, and information systems for design and management of engineering projects. Students drawn to civil engineering enjoy science and math, and the opportunity to serve society by creating, maintaining, and renewing the infrastructure on which we all rely. Civil engineers know how to evaluate risk and ensure the high reliability of their designs. As creators of skyscrapers, suspension bridges, and drinking water systems, failure is not acceptable.
