From showing the divine light through broken squares and incomplete circles which are simple in terms of schemata to producing the fine and rich multi-dimensional space in which the divine light is shown, Zhang Yu has provided contemporary art with a modern, native and individualized mode of expression. As a symbolic contrast of the noisy physical world, his Divine Light Series has been extended unceasingly. We see in this extension not only a rich variety of schemata, but also the new way in which the properties of the materials used in the art of ink and wash are brought into play. He has shown his challenge to the traditional brushwork and ink applying technique in his reinterpretation of the characters of water, ink and paper. He intends to prove the possibility of bringing the properties of the materials used in the art of ink and wash into play outside the system of traditional technique of ink and wash and tries to open up a more open and boundless prospect for the art of ink and wash.

　　Sensitive to foreign cultures, Zhang Yu has a wide field of vision of the world culture. The new schemata of ink and wash he has created have not only transcended the direct presentation of secular life and reintegrated our fragmented experience about the real world, but have also transcended the mode in which the East and the West, the traditional and the modern are opposed to each other. He has shown his approval of the native culture on the one hand and his ultimate concern of the human race on the other in his presentation of the divine light. He has also proved with his unique experiments in ink and wash that the Oriental abstraction in ink and wash can be used as the carrier of the present feeling and that it has completely the cultural function of containing the present experience and exhibiting the open field of vision.
