A rare selection of contemporary artworks went on the block at Sotheby's auction house, in London. On sale were paintings by Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, and works from the Chinese contemporary art world. The stellar painting is a portrait by Francis Bacon, called 'Study of Nude with Figure in Mirror'. Painted in 1969, the portrait shows a nude woman reclining on a chair, while being observed by a man who is reflected in a mirror. The painting fetched over 19 million pounds. There were Andy Warhol's three brightly coloured self portraits from 1987. The self portraits are painted in red, white, and blue - thought to resemble the stars and stripes on the American flag. Also on sale were paintings by Chinese artist, Zhang Xiaogang. The large painting shows a mother, father, and child, staring intently out of the canvas. Alexander Branczik, Deputy Director of Sotheby's said "This is a painting by the Chinese artist, Zhang Xiaogang. It's part of his most iconic series and actually the largest work of its kind that has ever been offered at auction. Zhang Xiaogang is an artist who grew up in the 1960s in China, at the time of the cultural revolution. That is his family background and what inspires the paintings he produces today." The painting entitled 'Big Family', was done in 2001. The painting fetched over 1.7 million pounds. Also attracting attention,two works by British-based graffiti artist Banksy. One of the works features two life-sized policemen with yellow smiling faces. The other painting by Banksy is from a series entitled 'Corrupt Oils'. The painting features Leonardo Da Vinci's famous 'Mona Lisa' holding a gun. The sale was Sotheby's first contemporary art only auction in London.
