VALIE EXPORT，奥地利艺术家，1940年出生于林茨，原名 Waltraud Lehner。她的艺术作品包括视频装置，身体表演，电影，计算机动画，摄影，雕塑和涵盖当代艺术的出版物。EXPORT 自称为媒体艺术家，也是在电影和影视作品行业的先驱者。在她的系列作品 Body Configurations [Körperkonfigurationen]（1972-82）中，她探讨了组织性肢体语言与周边城市空间之间关系的问题。自20世纪80年代后期以来，她使用数码技术一直在继续着突破性的社会批判性作品。

Since opening in 1983, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac has specialised in international, contemporary art representing around 60 artists and a number of renowned estates. With a team of 90 employees and approximately 40 extensive solo and group exhibitions held per year in the Salzburg, Paris Marais, Pantin and London spaces, the gallery supports and showcases the careers of some of the most influential artists today. The gallery represents its artists at all major art fairs worldwide. Active in both the primary and secondary markets, the gallery’s role extends to curatorial work, where it acts as consultant to major museums and public institutions as well as advisor to private and corporate collections. The gallery runs its own publishing house, producing catalogues and books to accompany exhibitions, inviting prominent international art historians, curators and writers such as Sir Norman Rosenthal and Orhan Pamuk to contribute.

Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac will present works from VALIE EXPORT, Irving Penn, and Robert Mapplethorpe at 2018 PHOTOFAIRS | Shanghai.

VALIE EXPORT, Austrian artist born in Linz in 1940. formerly known as Waltraud Lehner. Her works of art include video installations, body performances, cinematography, computer art, photography, sculpture and publications overing contemporary art. EXPORT is a self-declared media artist and is a pioneer in this regard, both in her cinematic and video work. In a series entitled Body Configurations [Körperkonfigurationen] (1972-82), she approached the issue of the relationship between a constructed body language and the surrounding urban space. She has continued her taboo-breaking, socially critical work since the late 1980s, in her involvement with digital technologies.

Irving Penn was one of the twentieth century's great photographers, known for his arresting images and masterful printmaking. At a time when photography was primarily understood as a means of communication, he approached it with an artist's eye and expanded the creative potential of the medium, both in his professional and personal work.

Robert Mapplethorpe took his first photographs using a Polaroid camera. His first Polaroids were self-portraits and the first of a series of portraits of his close friend, the singer-artist-poet Patti Smith. These early photographic works were generally shown in groups or elaborately presented in shaped and painted frames that were as significant to the finished piece as the photograph itself. Then he acquired a large format press camera and began taking photographs of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. During the early 1980s, Mapplethorpe’s photographs began a shift toward a phase of refinement of subject and an emphasis on classical formal beauty. During this period he concentrated on statuesque male and female nudes, delicate flower still lifes, and formal portraits of artists and celebrities.
