#EducationUSA Talking Majors# Fashion and Apparel Design Major
Are you ready to sketch designs? Create a clothing collection? Sew garments? Study textiles and fabrics? Construct patterns? Use computer-aided design programs? If you decide to take the plunge and major in fashion design, classes cover everything from sketching and computer design to pattern making and fabric selection. Fashion design is a highly technical industry, requiring great attention to detail and patience. It is this aspect that students often find most challenging.
Other majors related to Fashion Apparel Design include commercial and advertising arts, commercial photography, graphic design, illustration, industrial and product design and interior design.
Within the United States, most fashion designers work in large cities, such as New York or Los Angeles. In May 2010, almost 75 percent of all salaried fashion designers worked in New York and California. California led the nation, with a total of 4,480 employed fashion designers.
