Q1:What are you focusing on most recently? Is it your works, or reputation, or something else like marketing, life and social events? What measure would you take to devote yourself to your creation?
A: Currently I’m focusing on my works, because there won’t be any marketing or reputation to take care without fine works. But it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t lead a colorful life, for my inspiration always comes from daily life. Art is a way to express emotion on life. I also read lots of books on history and philosophy. To me, creation is not simply standing before canvas with a brush, is a ceaselessly procedure of self-questioning and meditation. I enjoy and benefit from devoting myself to this procedure.
Q2: Environment always has an impact on artists. How did it influence your works?
A: Outside environment can affect my emotion and mood. My willing to creation was spoiled in the few years that I spent in Shenzhen. I prefer the atmosphere in Guangzhou, especially in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, gathering together precise teachers and diligent students driven by a single goal—paint fine arts. And only by inheriting the national culture and combining it with other knowledge of art can this goal be fulfilled. This environment made me use some historical and cultural elements in completing my paintings.
Q3: What is your common on your newly completed paintings? How are you going to handle them?
A: I think I’m more mature. I was immersed in my own spiritual realm and felt satisfied. I'm trying to provide audience a new and unique way of art expression, which is a reflection of my inner heart. Communication between teachers and students is also important for it help me make progress. The exploration takes some time, but it is definitely worth fighting for and I think I still have a long way to go.
Q4: What is the major difference between your previous works and your current paintings? Where is your inspiration come from?
A: Some huge differences can be observed between my current paintings and previous works, for I became mature as time passed by when I studied as a postgraduate student. Unlike most of the others, I started my career after few years’ working in other industry. This helps me discover the dream of myself is to paint. This help me get rid of chasing the fame and strive for the sake of art in my artistic realm.
Q5: In your perspective, what is the most vulnerable, most shameless, and most outstanding part in Chinese art industry? Will it be gallery, exhibitors, artists, collector, or something else?
A: I think artist is the most vulnerable part, for the collectors and buyers sometimes only care the fame of a artist. I admire exhibitors because they always integrate all kinds of knowledge and experience to make an unforgettable art event and exhibition.
Q6:How do update your information in art circles? What is most influential event during the past two months?
A:I don’t have too much interest in what happened in the art circles, I would like to pay more attention to what will happen in the future, for fine paintings are the goal I’m pursuing.
Q7: What connection can you see between art creation and social reality? Should art be a projection of better life, or just the life itself? What is the relationship between your work and this era.
A: With the development of science and technology, artists can have a wide range of choices on expressing their thoughts. Lots of innovation and experiments have been attempted and perfected so it is almost impossible to success by means of expression innovation. Even there is one or two lucky cases, the methods will be quickly copied and mimicked. Under this condition should artists focus more on what to express. It is pretty difficult to not to be interfered by this materialized society, let alone to have independent opinions on historical, cultural and social matters. At least I myself always trying to observe all the trivial changes around me and search inspiration of my art.
Q8: Critics and reviewers always like to use theory to interpret art works. What does theory mean to you?
A: Theory point out the direction of where I should go. But an artist should always form his own style. A painting, which is just a copy of others without any innovation would quickly be forgotten, but which full of personality would remain all throughout art history. This is what is called “vitality of art”.
Q9: It has been argued that there are too many exhibitions around us right now, what is your point of view on it as a artist who also attend some of it.? And what suggestion would you like to give to those young men who just start their career as artists?
A: More is always better than less. On one hand, I think it is a opportunity for audience to accumulate their own experience and found their own taste on art. We shall do more than complaining the varying quality of the exhibitions but cherish the chance to compare and ponder the paintings, so the splendid work can stand out. On the other hand, the taste of the audience can gradually upgrade and those less good would finally be abandoned.
It is hard for me to give young artists advice for I’m actually one of them. I’m always nervous when I present my works, and confused when I’m criticized. So if there is one it should be: get used to different circumstances and always push yourself for better works.
Q10:Thanks for taking our interview, our last question is whether you want to reveal any of your further plans or exhibitions.
A: I will attend some exhibitions, but I will mainly focus on exploring the way to express my mind on paintings. Only read more, learn more and think more can I absorb more nutrition to support my spiritual realm.
