什么是心?用王阳明的说法,心就是我的灵明。那么我的灵明借笔墨以迹化之,也就是“心画”。中国 画主张写意,意者心音,写意画也就是心画。然而,心有真伪,画有优劣,难免有鱼龙混杂之叹,所以心画贵真,惟得真乃可感人。王宰“十日画一山,五日画一水,能事不受相促迫,王宰始肯留真迹”。八大山人则“攘臂弱管,狂呼大叫,洋洋洒洒数十幅立就,醒时欲求片纸只字不可得,虽置黄金百镒于前不顾也。”而很多一家作画时,惮毁誉于前,惑金钱于后,则必然会进退维谷,左右失据。是画家心志因物累而失其本真澄明之性也,故画现衰、颓、俗、鄙之相,是为作“心画”者戒!
  清画家郑板桥曾画一枝竹、十五片叶赠某太守,并题“敢以少少许,胜人多多许,努力作秋声,瑶窗弄风雨。”诗画皆轻松虚灵,极富禅意,寻味无穷,的确,是小中见大,以少少许胜多多许的佳作。至人得意忘形,所谓“何须千万朵,一枝足春风”。是以国画尚简,画小品居多。近人尚力作薄小品,总因市场驱使,买菜求添,与艺术不相干。就艺术而言,其实小品不小,要在内涵蕴藉,堪发人画外之思。如青藤、八大、吴昌硕、齐白石等皆善作小品得高品味。至于东施效颦者,古今皆有之,当不以此辈浅薄而轻小品,则小品幸甚,中国画亦幸甚!
  石涛作为一代画僧,其艺术成就之辉煌足使后学高山仰止。其“笔墨当随时代”的理论经常被近代理论家引用,以作为倡言“创新”“棒杀传统”的杀手锏。其实,“时代”只是一个极其模糊的界说,过去,现在,未来三世始终以因果律联系为一体。是以禅者认为:“过去心不可得,现在心不可得,未来心不可得。”所谓不可得是时空流转变迁,无片刻停止的缘故。人和事皆作为世间匆匆过客,虽欲不随时代亦无可奈何。所以历代画家作品无不打着其所属时代的印记。石涛作为亡明宗室,遁迹空门,竟不忘接康熙帝驾以邀宠,其阅历旷达如此,“笔墨随时”固无须论。而同为亡明宗室的八大山人敢终生不与清廷苟合,其不识时务者如此,其画清冷孤傲,不也正是时代留给他的印迹吗?至于明末遗民王鉴,王时繁诸人隐于书画,以摹古寄怀旧之情,其实尔等虽欲“与古人一鼻孔出气”亦不可得,其所处时代使之然也。绘画本抒自家情志,我自画我画。
